Maybe one for Steve (Get Carter)...
I was thinking the other day (like you do)
I was listening to Led Zeppelin on a very minor local radio station, and they must have played "Kashmir" four or five times throughout the day...bear in mind this is one tiny station in one tiny corner of the world, how many times a day for instance, is a Beatles record played anywhere on the planet 24 hours a day....many thousands I would have thought.
I remember Slade's Noddy Holder saying the royalties from "Merry Christmas everybody" alone since 1973 has kept him very "comfortable"..
Surely it's a licence to print money for life, if you hit the big time, especially if you own the publishing rights....isn't it?

Yep... it's all down to where and when it's played.

And you need to be the one getting the royalties. Too many young singers and musicians, especially in the 1960s and 70s, signed away the bulk of their royalty income by being encouraged to enter into either unfair contracts or "tax avoidance" set ups which effectively stopped them getting the full royalties they would originally have been entitled to.
Many have fought rearguard actions in later life in an effort to get more access to income from songs they wrote or recorded earlier in their careers.
