does anyone know if filling a pre-1987 Type 9 box to the bottom of the filler plug threads is overfilling it and whether this would cause it to leak?

dry fill is stated as 1.9 litres

and I've read the later boxes (post 87) had the filler lower down with a dry fill of 1.25 litres

I had a Type-9 box fitted to my Midget and it's always leaked and I've just read on a forum that the oil level should be half inch below the fill aperture threads is this correct?

IIRC, Level with the filler is fine. Were does it leak from? Early 5 speed Type 9s
would leak from the top inspection cover, the bolts would vibrate loose. Ford overcame this by fitting different bolts with built in washers.

hi Tony thanks for the reply I've never actually seen the box out of the car so don't know its age or where the leak originates, I'll ask at the 'sick bay'

Full until it comes out the plug is fine. The Type 9 isnt exactly a tight sealing box. The primary nose seals leak ( replace gasket), the speedo drives like a leak too and also the prop seal can.

I'm very lucky mine seems to be leaking from where the two halves meet, and possibly from the other places

in the back of my mind I do remember something about having a device to check the oil was a certain distance below the filler and someone has suggested it's on this box

I paid for a reconditioned box but based on the quality of work and person I later discovered I'm guessing the gearbox was probably not reconditioned - I even had to replace the gear lever plastic saddle after the supplier/fitter couldn't stop the rattle after replacing the (cheap to him) quickshift lever twice and him packing the third out with grease
