Hi all i'm replacing the plastic cup washer and spring where the gear lever mounts onto the remote linkage. As you can see from the photo i have removed the metal cup that sits over the plastic cup washer and this has released the tension on the spring underneath the plastic cup.

The lever remains fixed so what do i need to release/undo next? Do i need to release the tension on the spring clip you can see then remove the pin that is underneath the cup?

Cheers

Jimbo

Remove the clip immediately forward of the gear lever that holds the forked spring to the casing. You should then have reduced the spring arm tension enough to be able to move the 2 free ends of the spring sideways/around the two pegs in the gear lever ball.
(The forked spring is still held in place by a futher clip)

Reverse process when you re-assemble - a bit fiddly but possible via access from inside the car.

I forgot to add :-
Be careful when you lift the gear lever out of it's position. It contains a small spiral spring and plastic pad (to stop it rattling).

You can just lever the forked spring out of the way with a screwdriver - saves removing it.

As I recall the cup does bugger all aven when it's fixed down... so it might be a pointless exercise.

I've seen a couple of instances where the small tag for the securing bolt that holds the metal cap, has snapped off the cap. That leaves the gearshift as slack as an ex-wife.

Ok i think i was confused/confusing earlier. I have removed the gearlever from the car.

My new parts arrived today from Rimmer Bros. They consist of a metal ball with a hole in it ( which the bottom of the gearlever sits in ) and a plastic retaining 'cup' which the ball sits in.

So..............my question is how do i remove the old ball and plastic retaining cup? I can see them and get to them but they need to be prised out.

How?

Cheers Jimbo

Drill it out, or
it is plastic, so perhaps some short 'fire power'.....

Perhaps someone put it back without the spring (which is very stiff) and as you will try to install it is the typical 3-hands etc. required operation in a confined space.
Perseverance is required, as always as it is not difficult.

Ok the old plastic collar/cup and ball are out after a little thermal persuation hehe so next question is any tips on fitting the new set?

It clearly has to go in together i.e ball in cup then pressed in from the top but bugger me if i can get it in. Far too stiff/tight.

Obviously i cant use heat on the new plastic collar/cup thingy.

Stick some nuts on the end of the gearstick to protect the thread - then whack it with a hammer?

I think you put the plastic cup in first and then persuade the ball in.

We are talking about the rod-end of the extension shaft, aren't we? I think you may struggle to do it with the gearshift extension still on the car.

Its done and back together. An absolute fooker that had made no difference whatsoever and i wish i hadn't bothered!!

Still, i'll put it down to experience and a least the car is now roadworthy again in time for this weekend.

I was quite concerned i had made a schoolboy error when attempting this just days before the fest...................

Cheers for the help anyway guys
