Hi,

Can anyone give me a ball park figure for restoring an F reg Range Rover? My grandad has owned it from new but for the past 10 year's it's just been sitting in a field going bad. From what I can see it's in ok nick cosmetically but have no idea re the engine, gear box. My gramps said it wasnt running so guessing a new lump would be the main cost. I can get some picys up if it helps?

Cheers

How long is a piece of string? RRs rust everywhere given the opportunity, so without seeing it and prodding/tapping the usual suspects with sophisticated corrosion detection equipment(a large straight blade screwdriver and a 1lb ballpein hammer) it's a case of finger in the air and think of a number; my number is eleventytwelve hundred.

As unhelpful as it might sound, that's pretty much what I'd say too! It might be more cost effective to just weigh it in for scrap... frown

1989 has a ally boot floor, so just all the metal around that really.

I would budget for;

Inner wings x2
Headlamp boxes x2
inner sills x2
outer sills x2
A post x2
B post x2
Bulkhead cheeks x2
rear arches x2
rear x-member x1

Body mount rubbers
Springs
Dampers
Bushes
Exhaust
Brake discs/pads/pipes
A-frame ball-joint
Fuel line

Engine is likely to be OK if not seized, it would benefit from a cam-shaft refresh if high mileage.

That's a little list to start you off, might not all the repair panels, might need more smile

If time is on your side and you can weld, source bits cheap and second hand then you *might* end up doing it fairly cheap.

restoring to what level and to do what with? Do you want it standard or upgraded, just working and original or pristine?

Answering these could drastically affect the budget needed from a couple of hundred quid to £20,000+ if you really went to town.

No reason to scrap it either, pretty much all parts are available with ease. It all depends how far you want to go and how much of the work you can do yourself.

If what the ad says is true it may well fetch more than £10k dependent on the quality of the workmanship; £17k may be a little optimistic, but not by much.

I've seen this one and its spotless, I mean showroom new.
Is it worth it - well that depends how much you want one and what else you would buy for the money.
I imagine most people would baulk but time will tell if it sells.
