Older text font for number plates
Discussion
I've got a couple of cars from the 90s that could do with new number plates. As I understand it prior to 2001 there was a slightly wider font being used. The Charles Wright font that is now universally used is slightly narrower to allow all the necessary digits and that EU flag on the plate.
The old font was wider, more curvaceous and didn't have the serifs on any letters.
It's really bugging me trying to get some proper period plates made, everywhere I look all I'm offered is the brand new stuff.
Does anyone know a source?
Thanks in advance.

New (legal) plates have to have the new font, even if it's an old registration number.
You might be able to get the old font on a 'show plate' through the above sites but I'm not sure that it would be readily available as it's not really 'showy'.
Maybe call Craigsplates though, they're very helpful.

As it happens, I have just bought a set from Framptons for my 1999 V-reg M5. See http://pl8s.co.uk/number-plates-1973-2001.html for the applicable section. I bought the top ones in pressed reflective aluminium. At £30.96 delivered they weren't too expensive.
I was on the phone to Framptons earlier, they now only use the modern Charles Wright font. I'm not after show plates per se - just the older font.
One poster suggested that even replacement plates on post 73 cars have to be in this new font.
Maybe I worry too much.
Thanks for the suggestions, they've all been followed up.

No they don't use the new font for everything, my new plates tell different! Mine were not sold as show plates, and I even had to send them a scan of my V5 and photo license. But I am under no illusion that they will fall under the shady side of the law these days...One poster suggested that even replacement plates on post 73 cars have to be in this new font.

But aren't yours alluminium Black and White? Sorry, I should have been more specific, they suggested that all the white and yellow plates they make now use the modern font.suffolk009 said:

I can send you some pictures tonight, but mine are exactly like these (from Framptons)
So old style font, in pressed aluminium and in yellow/white.
There's a couple of companies that do exact replicas of your existing plates - to include the dealer details. Can't think who they are at the mo as I'm mobile. Have a google. If you have no joy, I'll see if I can dig out their links when I'm back on my pc.
Obviously, regs don't apply as plod and mot cannot tell when they were made

Unfortunately, dealerplates.co.uk (the only supplier I know was using the proper pre 2001 font) has shut up shop. Obviously, regs don't apply as plod and mot cannot tell when they were made

90s plates looked like this...

I got mine from chris@passionrestorationproducts.com
I can not remember them ever being embossed in the 90s, only the 80s.

Does some blinding repros.
Plod, see, would have to prove they are new plates
Being identicle to the originals, a hard thing to do without removing them
