I've posted this in the 350/Tam forum but as a lot of you won't venture in there hopefully I can get further comments from in here as well. Are there any 4.3 owners on here? Just musing at present but if I decide to keep my car (looking at an R8 this weekend) instead of a standard 3.6 rebuild following my 1/2 time bearing failure I'll stump up the extra for either a 4.0 RR or 4.3 instead.
However, how much difference is there in the 4.3 both over the 3.6 and also a 4.0?
I guess torque is much improved but how about acceleration? A standard 3.6 would be obliterated by a 911 turbo, how a=would a 4.3 fare? It's a comparison I can relate to hence the question there.
Whats the real world driveability like and also the fuel economy? Better or worse?
All comments would be much aprpeciated....

I've recently had a 4.3 from str8six along with an ACT airbox, decat, and lightweight flywheel.

Coming from a mk2 S which ran a 12.2 qtr mile, the new engine feels noticably quicker in the midrange, and even more keen to rev. It only came back from the running in service on Monday, so i've only opened up the taps a couple of times but it honestly gave me a feeling that i've only had from my old S1000RR bike in that I arrived at the end of the road much quicker than i'd anticipated given I was only on 3/4 throttle, and not running to the rev limit!

That all said, my decision was almost made for me given I needed some new pistons and ideally new rods, so it seemed silly to replace without upgrading. The cost increase from rebuilding my old engine vs putting in the 4.3 and new block, was one that seemed reasonable.

I would probably say that if you can get a full rebuild for around 5k, and you don't need new pistons/rods etc then I would go with that. It'll be a fantastic engine anyway, with the backup of the warranty. However if it looks like you're going to need to spend much more than that, then i'd seriously recommend not going to a 4-litre and going the whole hog for the 4.3.

Either keep it standard (still brill tho!) or go the whole hog, don't go down a halfway house as you'll probably spend almost as much anyway!

Good luck in the decision making thumbup

Oh, and Barclaycard have some very attractive credit at the mo whistle

Hi,
I've had the tvr power 4.3 for around 6 months now and was previously a 3.6. Quite simply the difference between the two is like black and white. The acceleration is savage and with the combination of a lighter fly the revs climb much faster than before. I've not had a chance to have a go against a 911 turbo yet, but would like to think it would be very close if not faster. I will be taking it to the drag strip in a couple of months and will be up against a load of other tvrs and also some 911s, Nissan gtrs and other heavily modified cars so will be a good test.

I tend to find that with the new power I don't have to put the foot down so often to get a grin, unlike I did when it was standard as the power is available much sooner, but when you do floor it the whole thing turns in to mad thing and it did take me a bit of time to get used to it. To give you an idea of the difference, the wife is now scared when I floor it which she wasn't beforehehe

Is it worth the money? Well I guess it comes down to how much you have to spend. I got it done simply because I wanted more power and a warranty not because the engine needed rebuilt but think it was totally worth it . Look at it this way , what else are you going to get for the money with that looks, power and drama? You also get a exhaust note that is a little deeper which sounds great but doesn't affect all the pops an bangs.

When it comes to mpg when I drove back to Scotland from Coventry I got close to 30 although that was just cruising in 5th most of the way.

If I had a car that needed a rebuild I would be stretching to the 4.3 or 4.5 for sure.
Hope this helps.

Out of interest how much extra was the lighter fly wheel? My engine will be with Power this week and I've opted for the 4.3, budget is tight but there are some things that are very easy to do with the engine in bits and I guess the fly is one of them so cost would be part only. Also what sort of turnaround time did you guys see?

Hi Zippee, I had the same question re the fly wheel, Dom said its not nessesaraly with the 4.3 so I didn't bother. I had a lot of other things done but the engine was 3 weeks.

The flywheel was around the £300 mark if I remember correctly. I only chose it as I was concerned about losing some of the old engine's character due to the longer stroke.
Jason's advice was the same as Dom's... That it's not really necessary.

If money is tight then I'd do the engine mounts, hoses and fuel lines and a full fluid change as a minimum, and then save any spare for anything random that crops up.
I'm still hunting electrical gremlins from having the car off the road for 6months!
