Sukhoi or Mig?

Seems to be an argument in the comments section regarding this aircraft, some seem to think it's an SU17/20/22 rather than a Mig 21. It's difficult to see the wing config from this angle so I can understand the confusion.

Personally I reckon it is a Mig, looking at the long shock cone and the lack of wing fences.

It's a Mig-21, look at the main undercarriage and the lack of undercarriage doors attached on the legs and of course the much large intake radome.

Mig-21, no doors.

I think I was the first to point out the Plane was a Sukhoi... However they have changed the picture since and the one used on the story now is a MIG-21. The original picture had a Varible Geometry wing on it and I checked to get the correct number.

In the Soviet era, the Russians often commissioned the two main fighter design bureaus, Sukhoi and MiG, to BOTH buiold a fighter each around new set of specifications. MiG would build the smaller short range aircraft and Sukhoi would build the larger aircraft.

So you often get a pair of aircraft emereging from both organisations at roughly the same time and looking vaguely like each other.

Oh, and they've been using an image from a UKAR contributor.

I had my doubts about that being a syrian aircraft - so went back and checked where I thought I'd seen it before - that's an egyptian Mig-21.
