Bike Friendly City

I've been in Warsaw for the last couple of days - lovely city, really enjoyed exploring it, and there are a LOT of cyclist about, on the roads and often on the pavements.

I mentioned to my Warsaw colleague that it seemed to be a very bike friendly city, she replied "not everywhere, in the centre bikes still have to use the roads". Made me chuckle, such a difference from the UK.

Still think I might consider bringing my Brompton with me next time I come over, if it's for a longer trip. Only worry is how badly damaged it might get in the hold lugage.

I've been surprised recently at how bike friendly it is in Germany.

Nearly got mowed down by cyclists several times last week.

I think its everywhere in Europe thats better than the UK. I spent a year living in Sweden and they have a whole cycling infrastructure with dedicated paths, bridges, tunnels and signage etc etc. Cycling around was a real pleasure.

I visit Den Haag in Holland on a regular basis and am amazed at the attitude of drivers towards cyclists in and around the centre. The bike really is king and there are thousands of them on the roads and paths during rush hour, mind you the city really is geared up towards encouraging people to get in the saddle! There are wide, flat bike paths on every pavement with cycle traffic lights sequenced into the traffic lights on the main road, it all just kind of 'works'.

What makes me laugh is watching the thousands of people commuting to work, school etc. all the things you see drivers doing in their cars in the rush hour over here, finishing their toast, brushing their hair, texting, etc they do on bikes, and seemingly without crashing into each other!

They are also not put off by weather, rain, wind, hail, snow, does not stop them, proper nation of cyclists!

After the Belgian GP a few years ago I was driving in the Mustang to a friend's place in Dordrecht (Holland). We got a bit lost in the last couple of miles and ended up near a school at hometime - bikes everywhere! We just stopped until it died down a bit although the car did attract a lot of attention and some near misses from the gawpers
