pants down?

Seriously,

I was pottering about in El 'Mariachi (bimma) earlier this week and got caught in heavy rain on the motorway.

It was the sort of rain which reduces visability by a HUGE amount due to the wheels infront shooting the water at you

As i sat there i thought... "glad im not in El 'Beast" as being so low would mean visability would be even more reduced Also as the wiper tends to be crap (although mine seem quite good) i can see how it is a bit of a struggle.

So,

who has been caught? what the hell did you do/should you do? and what do you use to stop itchyness/redness after shaving? Even the non-alcoholic aftershave balms sting my pretty face. my face hurts

edit: i missed the "r" off you would you be so kind, B?

And yes, I have been caught with my roof down. My rule of thumb is if it's not raining or about to rain at the start of the journey then the roof comes off, except Mrs B often overrides this citing frizzy hair or coldness as a reason to keep the roof on.

However, one day at the start of a journey I looked at the sky and said "damn, we'd better put the roof on", and for once she said "nah, it'll be OK". So like a fool I followed her optimism and before we knew it we were caught in a very heavy downpour. Normally when I've been caught in the rain it's been OK, but the droplets were so heavy they weren't being blown over the cabin, and we were getting soaked even at 50mph. And then the INSIDE of the windscreen got soaked so it started to get hard to see where we were going. In fact visibility was crap for a long time after the rain stopped.

I got caught last Friday where the M18 meets the M62......started in Essex in 30C sun.....kept having to stop and soak myself in "factor 10" ...... then as I appraoched my destination "Hull" it started....the sky turned grey (actually black) and then the rain came......being new to Elise ownership this was quite a scary experience. I was in the outside lane....getting soaked, and I couldnt actually move lanes as the steering wheel seemed to not be attached to the Wheels!

In the end I had to put the Hazard lights on and slow to 30 mph (in the outside lane) just to get traction with the road....then I found a bridge and stopped on the hard shoulder. The lorries had great fun going as close to the guy wearing shorts trying to get the roof on his elise, and ensuring that the spray from their wheels soaked me and the car as much as possible!

In fact it was a bad journey really as on the M11 some **** thought it would be a fun game to log a half full plastic bottle of water into my car.....ended up hitting the windscreen and bouncing onto another car next to me.....I just wish there had been a junction nearby so I could have rammed it somewhere unpleasent on him! (he was going south on the other side)...has anyone else had this sort of thing happen.....hope it is not a regular occurance as it could have casued a serious accident!

Woah, your handling should not be that badly affected by rain. What tyres are you on? (those godawful P-Zeros would explain a lot) Is your geometry OK?

Yep I am on P-Zeros.....do they really make THAT much difference then? They look fairly new so won't be needing replacement for a while yet unfortunately! Not sure about geo......bought it from Paul Matty's at the start of June and although I have seen some stuff on here about it I have not had it checked.....they did give it a "C" service at Matty's before I picked it up....would it have been checked then?

SLOW THE HELL DOWN! Double at least the normal following distance to increase visibility, steer clear of inside lane as the trucks cause annoying ruts which hold the water and generally drive like Miss Daisy.

and what do you use to stop itchyness/redness after shaving? Even the non-alcoholic aftershave balms sting my pretty face. my face hurts

Clinique Skin Supplies For Men - Post-Shave Healer... it's bloody great!

Edited to say: Guess I got the wrong gist there... been caught once with the roof-panties off at the start of a downpour. Pulled over and did an F1 pit-crew styleee top on. I reckon I had the whole thing up and stretched on the cams within 2 mins of opening the door to get out.

In my experience, yes. IMHO P-Zeroes are horrible horrible dangerous tyres in the wet.

But the elise is also very sensitive to tyre pressures, if it's feeling skittish, check they're not over inflated. I run my Yokoham Advans 1psi below book figures.

so the pirelli's on the elise are crap as well? This seems to be the general opinion of 306 gti-6 and rallye owners regarding the P6000 standard on them The usual upgrade tyre is the Goodyear eagle F1, whats reccomended for the elise?

Driving from Bordeaux to the Med coast along the Pyreneen Autoroute . . . Cruising along at about 90-100 . . . big thunderstorm in the distance . . . g/f checks map, we recon it may not be over the road . . . press on . . . starts spitting, then raining, then it's absolutely torrential . . . no way can you stop when it gets to this stage, even if not on a motorway, so we keep the boot in and press on . . . new advans on at the time, so good enough in the wet, maintained about 90-100 through the storm and out the other side . . . yes we got soaked (it was like being in a sinking submarine ), but nothing like as bad as if we'd stopped . . . couldn't let one wee rain storm make us break 3 weeks of roof free driving . . .

. . .

Last year I lost my mobile to flooding after leaving the roof in the garage, and getting caught out with another thunder storm about 250 miles away from home . . . had to bail the car out with a sponge . . .

Couple of nights ago I got caught out on the motorway going into Edinburgh, had to abandon proceedings under a bridge . . . and re-roof . . .

In general, if you can maintain at least 60mph . . . you stay reasonably dry . . . only the rear screen gets wet . . .

Still . . . saves cleaning the interior

Due to Mrs Skinner's dislike of having a single dred, if it mearly looks like there might be some mild mist the request is made for the roof to stay on. Not always followed, mind

However, in the heady days of early ownership my pants were never up. So one day I had picked a friend up and taking him for a blat round the north of Leeds. "Looks a bit dark ahead" say I. "Hmmmmm, we should be OK i think......" About 30 secs later, on a busy shopping street with no parking on either side, the first golf ball size hail stone hits my forehead. "Oh crap". Although we managed to get the roof on in less time than it takes Drag to offend the entire PH membership, we were still sitting in about 2in of hail stones that gradually began to melt and make visablility rather interesting.

As for people throwing things at the car, touch wood, nothing serious yet. Some small child thought that chocolate 'Donalds milkshake would look good over the NS wing, but other then that.....

When I had the old Elise I went to visit some friends in the Isle of Dogs for a particularly messy night out . Next morning we decided to drive over to Grenwich for a spot of lunch. One of the girls, who is particularly , spotted the Elise and started pleading with me for a ride. It when I dropped my pants and she screamed that I realised exactly what she wanted

So keen to impress we took the roof off, donned sun glases and set of poncing over to Grenwich - only to get stuck in a traffic jam and for it to start snowing - damn! So rather than get out and put the roof up, I borrowed a golfing umbrella from the car next to us and we huddled together under that for the next 20 mins - oh life is so cruel
