Pretty much EVERY manufacturer because of the whole "brand identity" deal.

I don't think so. There are plenty of manufacturers that manage to Make different cars in their range look different, while retaining common features.

I must say the big Bentley (not the mulsanne) looks rather soda superb,

When they were current I used to get Polo 6N2 and Mark 4 Golfs confused when viewing the back of the car.

I kid ye genuinely not. Was walking towards a 2011 or 2012 model Audi from the front and I could not tell if it was an A4, an A6 or an A8.

Only the length and small badge at the rear confirmed it was the A6.

When I was 18 and driving around in my mum's 6N2 Polo, my girlfriend's dad had a mkIV Golf.

He went in the Polo loads of times, and after a good few months casually mentioned something about us having the same car. He thought they were both Golfs...

The Audi range is really dull at the moment, it looks like they made the biggest one first then just shrank the rest. Really formulaic design - give it that gopping great grill, shrink it by 20%, and subtract 1 or 2 from it's model designation number.

Think the new Astra has ripped off a few cars, influences of Kia Cee'd and the current Megane

BMW used to call its strategy "one car, three sizes". Seems to have worked pretty well for them. Almost as if thats what people want wink
