sauntered down to the scrappies today, and spotted a steel front differential from a 2000 grand vitara that i could fit to my older vitara, and a full set of springs that would net me 1.5" of lift all round. excellent.

problem was the greedy gits running the place... i offered £100 for the diff and springs, but expected to be charged about £150.

the bds turn round sucking through their teeth telling me diffs are veeeeeery veeery expensive, i dont know how much.. hmmm... for you. £200

i think.. hmm expensive, but i guess i can live with that. so i ask him, for the diff and springs together £200... deal!

no no no he says, just the diff, springs another £100 suzukis verry verry expensive

at this point i just turn and leave, those bds can go fk themselves!

so when did scrappies stop being a bargin? i mean, £300 i could buy about 12 vitaras and have spares for life ffs

Since they had to comply with all kinds of environmental legislation - which can be hugely expensive to implement.

When the frigging environmentalists started making them need a license for everything and required them to drain and recycle components

not this scrappy it would seem..

cars and bits haphazardly everywhere, cars stacked belly on roof, no racking, broken glass and oil soaked dirt everywhere, felt propperly ol-skool

Must be just you? I bought a whole front end (including lights, grill slam panel etc.) in matching colour for a friends Passat. Cost me 150 euro! Few scratches which buffed out.

It's the Internet sales that have pushed up prices, stuff they used to peddle to whoever happened to live within a few miles is now available to the world.

My mrs wanted a center console for her Scenic - on eBay they are doing over £100. I happened to be passing an old school scrapyard in Donny who does nothing online, center console and 4 leather door cards for a mere £25. No Vat either

It's been a few years since I was at a scrappy but was amazed to find VAT added to the price of the bits I wanted, how does that work? I thought VAT had already been paid when the car was new!

Pricing is about how desperate you appear to be for some rare or not so rare part.

Always has been, but now all they have to do is look at completed items on Ebay, and they can see what they go for.

Emailed a few breakers for a new light fitting for my car, they all wanted £30 plus delivery.

BMW main dealer charged £17 for a brand new one, fully populated with bulbs!

Quite, when I needed a headlight for a Micra my local scrapyard wanted £10 more than I could buy it for new

After pointing this out, they told me to buy it new then - so I did!

Had a great time at one of the many scrappies at Motor City near Dubai at the beginning of the year.

Want a scooby engine for £1000.

A plethora of other makes including a Bentley and Maserati engine to be had.

In this climate bits should be cheaper, but it does depend on how old your car is,some manufacturers have stopped making some parts for older cars and the scrap yards know this hence steep prices.

that's just it, i wasn't after a rare part..

ahh well. they've lost my custom.. im sure they'll just end up weighing it in to make space for something else, never selling the part and sacrificing "some" income for "no" income.

The steel doffs are somewhat 'rareish', but springs, even new are cheapish. Jimnybits do 2" higher springs for £150.
