Hi,

Can I fail my mot in a few weeks time if i fit xenon bulbs that give a white light with a blue tint?

Are these type of bulbs legal?

If they're xenon effect halogen bulbs, you'll be fine. They just don't work as well as 'normal' halogen bulbs.

If they're HIDs you'll probably still pass unless they're the chavvy purple ones or if they're badly adjusted.

They are not hids. Just normal xenon bulbs. What do you mean badly adjusted?

Depends on the M.O.T tester and what kind of mood they're in. They passed in my Rover but Failed (advisory) in my Cinquecento. If they're not "E" marked then they could fail and if your're stopped with them fitted you could end up with a few points.

Doesn't that depend on the car?

There are some where the front bumper has to come off.

Proper retro fit HID kits will or already should be failing the M.O.T already as you must have automatic self leveling and headlight washers, if your car does not have these then it should fail. Incidently my Range Rover is one of the few cars you can fit them to as it has self leveling air suspension and headlight wash wipe (not that I would fit the awful things anyway). I supose some really old cars could also get away with HIDS example Carlton estate as many of these had self leveling rear shocks and headlight wash wipes.

Wrong. The rules say if a car has HID then self-levelling and headlight washers must work IF FITTED. If they aren't fitted, they can't be tested and therefore cannot cause a fail.

Correct.

I retro-fitted the OEM HIDs to my Mondeo, so it doesn't have the self-levelling. They passed an MOT.

i thought they must obliged to the mot rules not on their mood.

What is the criteria the bulbs must meet to be 'E' Marked?

How would the tester know if they were e marked ,they are not allowed to remove them .

Don't tell him anything at all. Otherwise it will raise his suspicions.

I have yet to encounter an MOT tester who will check stuff like that. As long as the beam pattern is correct, it won't fail.

HIDs in reflectors (and probably projectors too) will have a beam patern that's completely wrong. As long as the bulbs are working, beam pattern is the only thing that's checked on the MOT so it needs to be right.

Good for you. Not every car in the world is the same as a Bora, is it?

It takes three hours to change a tail light bulb on a Street KA. Faff!
