So, I was thinking of getting my M5 DMS remapped - mainly to get rid of the limiter for those rare occasions when I get to max the car out. They quoted me something like £850 + VAT. Not sure what price I was expecting, but this put me off.

Then I've been thinking. Apparently, this re-map gives you maybe 3 MPG better economy. Using my man maths, I've worked out that this might save a full tank of petrol every 1000 miles. Therefore after maybe 11,000 miles the DMS remap starts to save you money.

Can anyone spot any flaws in my logic?

The increased consumption above the presently limited top speed and the cost of tyres suitably speed rated perhaps...

Also, 3 mpg improvement equates to around 15-20% does it not? I find that almost incredible just from a remap.

My E61 is running a DINAN tune along with intakes and exhaust and whilst power is up (567 bhp on last dyno) mpg is still around 16-17mpg.
Indeed anyone remapping tends to make the most of it and plants their foot more often than with a standard car so actually you will see worse MPG.

Sounds good in principal but it never works that way.

well, my MPG seems to stick around 13, so 16 - 17 would be awesome. I am lucky to get 200 miles from a tank.

Remapping a standard M5 is pretty fruitless to be honest. You need a lot of mods to see any worthwhile gains. Mods = money!

Not sure where you do most of your driving but the figure I posted is pretty much no town driving but rural A/B roads with some motorway stuff thrown in....ie pretty much the best you could expect!

The reality is even with man logic, it doesnt wash too well if you are purely looking at it from an economy point of view.
