Low speed/idle issues

Not sure if this is the 'throttle servo issue'?
Symptoms: Start the car, it starts and idles nicely at 800-1000rpm.
Put the car into gear, usually reverse and bring the clutch up - the car revs drop and it almost stalls.
Try again with a little more gas and end up revving/reversing/revving/reversing. Driving is fine, and pulling away from junctions OK - but backing up the car seems to end up in me either stalling or gunning it like a nutter to keep it running.
