There's so much stuff on iPods on the net that I can't see the wood for the trees so can I ask a simple iPod question here. I want a simple iPod to play music in my car, primarily the 1958 Aston. I currently have a 'Shuffle' and what I want in addition is to be able to select entire albums i.e. to choose the music and for it to charge on the jack while playing, preferably not via a cigar lighter, because that doesn't work. So, a Nano, Touch or Classic? I've read the nano doesn't charge from the jack lead?

For a 1958 Aston , it would have to be a grey anodised Classic.

What do you mean by "charge on the jack"?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, will it charge from the jack?

If you're referring to the standard 3.5mm headphone socket as the jack, then none of them charge via that. If you mean a standard Apple dock connector, then they will all charge via that assuming the head unit is fairly recent.

I believe some iPods take a charge while playing through the 3.5mm jack lead plugged into the aux socket.

Presuming that this is serious, you will need a stereo which incorporates a proper iPod connector. This is a slender rectangular plug, not a 3.5mm stereo jack.

If you opt for a stereo jack lead connection then it wont charge and youll have to get your cigarette lighter repaired. If you choose to buy a stereo with a dedicated iPod connector then youll be able to charge the device and control it through the stereos controls.

Alternatively, and slightly more expensively but it includes DAB, you could try this

Bung your music on a 32GB USB stick instead.

(I appreciate it's a little bit more of a convoluted solution).

AFAIK, only the current shuffle charges through the headphone jack.
Though I don't think you'll be able to play be albums on one, you can play playlists.

Totally serious. I have an old valve radio which has been adapted to receive AM/FM and with an input for MP3 player. When my iPod shuffle is playing it cut across the radio, I set it to max volume and control it from the radio set. As the shuffle has just one hole in it and charges when sat in it's base via the same socket as it plays through I had hoped I could get one which charges while I'm listening to it. If not I'll take a charger and charge it in the hotel.

The only one that will charge from there is the shuffle that you currently have, any others would need a 12v input to the base connector.

I don't know about that shuffle but the one I have (the one after that model) has a button that allows you to set stuff to play in the order it was loaded meaning that you can listen to a few albums back to back.

Yeah I can switch to play in order or shuffle but was hoping to have some more ability to do selection. I'll buy a classic and put up with charging from the mains.

I'm sure a talented auto electrician could wire you up one of the adapter kits that come with a lead to the base of the ipod and that should provide power via the head unit.

No, I don't think they do since the AUX socket isn't powered.

get a classic ipod, and the battery life should be good enough for ages between charging biggrin

and 160gb should be enough for plenty of albums, and it shouldnt look completely out of place like an iphone or ipod touch on the dash of the Aston wink

If you use a lead like this:

It has a 30pin connector on one end, and this goes in the bottom of the iPod. Then on the other end it has a USB connector and an AUX lead. The AUX lead goes to the AUX in on the radio, and the USB lead can go into a USB ciggie adapter like this:

You can wire in a supplimental ciggie socket in the glovebox or something or if you're feeling brave then take appart the USB wire and hook that directly into a 12v supply. (Easiest answer would probably be to get a UBS-Ciggie adapter and take that appart, and wire the 12v inputs directly to a switched live on the car.)

Then the aux lead and power lead are all hidden away, and you just leave the one cable, the 30pin, available either in the glove box or run up to a cradle or something. Since both power and audio are carried to/from the ipod on the one cable it actually makes for quite a neat install.

You can get the bits to make a USB charging socket - it's no harder to do than an additional cigar lighter but is a lot less obtrusive. As a bonus it can then be used to charge up digital cameras, phones, Sat Navs etc. and they'll all be hidden in the glovebox. I wouldn't be surprised if the cigar lighter gets replaced by USB in new cars before very long.
