The prancing horse was originally the family crest of the World War 1 ace, Francesco Baracca. The crest was given as a gift by his family to the young Enzo Ferrari to use as his personal symbol for his racing car. He, of course, later founded Scuderia Ferrari and used the symbol as the company logo.
