About an hour ago I was woken by the sound of a little dog barking at the wall of our house.

The dog is a pug. The little pug looks old and has what appear to be cataracts over it's eyes. It's a friendly little thing, but it's 00:30 and I have no idea what to do or who to call.

I've never seen the dog in this area before.

I don't fancy calling the dog warden (as i've heard of the whole 7 days before being put to sleep thing), but would the RSPCA suffice?

Scrap that. RSPCA don't do stray dogs.

Give it some food and look after it - it sounds like it has a loving owner who you will be able to find tomorrow (eg put an ad in the local shop's window).

The owner will thank you for it.

I'd love to but....

I've got two young boisterous Border Collies who are distressing it so can't really bring it in the house frown

I'm at work at 0700 and can't really dump it with my parents who look after mine whilst i'm at work.

Police will in my experience 'reluctantly' take a stray dog until business hours when a dog warden can collect. As you have already discovered RSPA don't do strays.

Have a think what the owner is feeling now (I'm not a dog person) and do your best.

They are probably really worried. Why not put the Collies in another room for now?

Just being a pain smile sorry.

Get a leash on its collar and go for a 30 minute wander. You might meet the owner?

Had this last year, little staffy (I think) turned up outside our house, it was around midnight so we took him in but our dogs went insane, so he had to live in the kitchen. He was pretty thin and had mange, so obviously had been out for a good while. The next day we asked around and took him around the neighbourhood but nobody knew him, so the day after he went to a local dog rescue home run by the dog's trust (I believe). Apparently his owners were looking for him, heard he was there and went to claim him, so a happy ending! Hope yours turns out just as well

This is the little thing, it's eyes don't look so good

Yuk, not a dog person but someone has lost their pet and will be panicking.

As above - go for a walk around the area and listen for someone looking for a dog.

If not keep it overnight - imagine someone had found one of your pets.

It looks like a fairly old dog - not the sort that is going to go far.

I agree - get out for a 30 minute walk.

Think it's a pekingese and not a pug, though happy to be corrected.

Be nice to it op, maybe make a quick poster with your number on and that pic, chuck it on a lamp post outside and hope someone spots it?

They all look the same to me these little dogs.

I've just spoken to the on call vet who has given me advice what to do. I'm going to get someone to take the dog in in the morning to be scanned. If it's scanned we will try and find the owner, if it isn't, i'll get in touch with the local Dog Warden or animal rescue.

Am I too cynical in thinking it may have been dumped because the owner didn't want to pay to get its eyes treated?

No, but an irrelevant post at this moment in time.

Look after it for now, the owner will be pleased.

Definitely a pekingese and not a pug. Pugs don't have long hair

Call the local police station and vets and tell them you found the dog, the owner is probably worried sick.
