Hey guys, I have recently started playing football again after a long period of inactivity. I injured my heel playing about 5 weeks ago, it seemed to just come on during the game, but I carried on playing through the pain (not mega, just achey and tender), but the next day I could barely walk.

Over the course of the week, it seemed to get better, so I played again the following week, it was fine for 30 mins then gradually got more sore as the game went on.

I have not played for 4 weeks now, but it does not seem to have really healed at all, I can walk on it fine, but if I arch my foot, or bash the back of my heel it is really tender, I am quite concerned about it now. The pain is in the back of my heel, not the sole, it's a really odd place to injure as it seems to be a result of the impact of running, yet it is halfway up the back of my heel?

I suppose my question is really what is the most likley injury to the back of your heel, it seems to get worse with running/comprssion, is it a bone injury that isn't healing, or somthing like a achillies injury but at the very end of the tendon etc?

Is it somthing worth going to the docs for, or is it best going to hospital and asking for an x-ray?

Fairly common runner's injury and unlikely to be achilles related if you could play 30 mins football.Whatever it is will require a lot of rest but the physio ( wink ) will tell you what action to take.

I had an identical pain a year or so back, after jumping into a swimming pool that was a metre shallower than I expected it to be. BAM, landed almost straight legged and I was convinced I'd broken something.

Anyway, the pain was all but gone next day, but I had this very tender spot right on the back centre of one heel, sharp deep pain if I tapped it or banged it.

It did slowly go away, several months, so I'm guessing it may have been a slight fracture, or maybe something torn off a bit, a ligament or tendon.

I'm too much of a wimp man to go to the doctor over stuff like that, so I guess I'll never know what it was.

I've had heel pain for years, due to too much 5's football on indoor hard courts, it's caused by a build up of calcification on my heel bone, which grows where tiny fractures occur due to impact, can't remember the medical name, you can get your heel bone shaved but I just gave up playing 5s on indoor courts, and bought some decent running shoes for running in.

Retrocalcaneal bursitis a likely cause.
Google for more info.
