Audi Q7 or Range Rover?

I think I may just have to accept that driving an Audi S4 Avant that struggles to do 20mpg and more annoyingly has such a rubbish range is just too annoying to live with. I have to fill the thing up every 250-300 miles, which is basically twice a week.
I need a big car with 4x4 as I live on a farm and all that entails, plus going to have a baby....
I'd be looking to spend probably £16k or thereabouts. Any thoughts on Audi vs Range Rover? I'd probably get an 06 plate in both cases. I don't like the X5 or the Merc ML.

If you like the Audi apart from the fuel consumption what about an Allroad Tdi...? The 3.0 has plenty of grunt and is reasonable on fuel.

This, had ours 4 years,now done 80K, and the only thing we'll be swapping it for is a Disco 4 when they reach sensible money.

bearing in mind that you are wanting to actually go off road and tow things, I'd be inclined to stick with the Range Rover, or go for a Disco 3 as suggested.

I was in a friends Q7 recently, it felt like a reverse-tardis, huge from the outside but not particularly roomy (for the size of the thing) inside.

I hadn't thought of an Allroad..good tip. Disco is a bit "blocky" but I appreciate they are very good.

I'm not sure how big the tanks are on these things but most of my cars tend to get 300 miles on a tank which seems pretty normal. I don't do so many miles so that equates to me filling up roughly every 10 days. I can appreciate how frustrating it is to have to fill up every few days but I'm not sure these big 4x4's will get you any further.

My new Q7 is doing 32mpg compared to my '06 on which did 24. Same roads and driving style. Very impressive improvement.

Q7 3.0 TDI realistically low 20s, best I've ever managed was 28 on a smooth run sitting at 76-77.

Q7 is a barge. Wafty and floaty. Far too big and not engaging to drive. You may also tt your head on the windscreen pillar every time you get into it. The screen is very raked.

Range Rover or Range Rover Sport ? 2.7 diesel engine is ridiculously slow. You will get overtaken by wildlife. Range Rover Sport (with 3.6 engine) is quite a decent drive for what it is.

X5 is better.

If he wants off road and towing capacity get a Toe- Rag (Touareg). In fact maybe get a Touareg anyway.

Sorry, jumped to a conclusion from "I live on a farm with all that entails". I perhaps wrongly assumed that meant offroad and towing, it certainly does here in Devon.

You can do better than that!

Q7 4.2 TDI, gets around 21mpg on its usual journeys (10-15 miles, mix of dual carriageways, B-roads and towns) and about 27mpg on a run when fully loaded (6 occupants, 2 cats, luggage).

However I once got nearly 40mpg by engaging cruise control at 50mph on an empty motorway. It was just the once, mind, and I had hours in hand to be where I needed to be.

For the OP, don't buy these cars for the mpg. That is secondary. You buy these cars for their function. If significantly better mpg is required then look elsewhere.
