Hi there,
I dont know if this is the right place to post but i cant post in the lounge yet as im a new member.
My dad runs a private taxi firm and found a backpack in the boot of his taxi, handed in to the police and theyve said no one has tried to claim, apparently there are valuable items inside and none of these have been reported lost, my stepdad has now got the backpack as police have said no one has claimed it he is welcome to it,
The only items mentioned to me are an ipad 2 and a camera of some sorts.
He doesnt feel comfortable keeping the items so im wondering if charities would take them?
Regards

I'd be tempted to see if I could get at the iPads e-mail and send the owner a message. Did that with a phone I found some years back, found "Dad" in the phone book and he got his son to contact me with an address to send it back to.

Plug it in and turn the iPad on. They may be able to send a message to it.

Thought you could track an iPad if you lost it?

Did a similar thing. Father in Law lost his glasses on a roller coaster. We never did find the glasses, but I found a nice phone in the hedge whilst looking. Presumably lost in a similar manner! Returned phone after calling "Dad".

Only if it is turned on, and connected to either 3G or wifi.

An iPad and camera should have plenty of information in them to get to the original owner - if there are any paid for apps on the iPad the owner would have had to give credit card details to Apple. It could also still be signed in to facebook or email. Plug it in and switch it on, and see what you get.

Whats up?

I think its very generous of Fox to donate £250 to charity in return for the iPad.

depends is the owner had installed/set-up the "find my ipad" app

http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad/find-my-ipad.html

I have it on mine (and on the iPhone too)

OP good on you for being honest smile nice to read threads like these, hopefully the rightful owner will get his possessions back

If you are anywhere near an Apple store take it in. The owner may have registered it and while they might not give you their address they might act as intermediary to help you get in touch.

Apple will help to locate the owner - if you email them the serial number they should be able to trace the owner via his registration & contact them on your behalf.

Personally I wouldn't sell it or donate it just yet - there is a very good chance that the owner can be traced via Apple.

Or has iOS5 and and iCloud account set up. No app required in that case.

The iPad should have a contacts app, which if the owner has an iPhone will contain all the contacts from their phone.

And if the iPad is locked? The best thing is to plug it in, power on, and hope a message has been sent.

Good point, but if its locked it won't connect to wifi automatically it asks if you want to join a network.

That's the issue with the wifi version.

You're a good man smile

If you connect the iPad to your own wifi network the owner should be able to find it with their Find My iPad app.

Good on you, I hope karma pays you back one day biggrin
