If I want a car that can do stellar mileage, what should I get?

I was think something like a Mercedes W126 (S Class) but they are getting very old now, is there anything built within the last ten years that would be as bulletproof? And rust proof?

I don't mind higher maintenance costs if it's a nice car like the above.

German Taxi spec E-class? or a 300C that some switched too?

Essentially any motorway barge either German or mock-German like the 300C.

Depending on your maintenance budget and overall needs you might want to avoid turbos. £4,000 to replace on a big diesel Merc.

Almost anything can do stellar mileage, so long as you keep the maintenance to as-new levels. Replace suspension components as needed, refresh gearbox linkages etc, do the obvious oil changes and the like, and your car will hit pretty much any mileage you like.

Exceptions - Mercedes (rust), Audi A8 (gearbox), 7-series V12 (just waaaaay too complex and expensive to keep running economically).

If I had to pick one car to run to 250k+ miles, I'd think of either a VW Phaeton 3.0TDI or an E65 745i/730d.

I've typically run cars to well over 150k and have either been astonishingly lucky (possible) or spent money sensibly on maintenance - either way, I've not had a turbo failure or a dual mass flywheel fail on me. Never had a problem with gearboxes or engines either.

All: if I read his profile correctly, OP is in Canada.

Questions for op:
  • How do you feel about diesel engines? Is diesel easily available?
  • Is fuel cost a concern?
  • Is the cost of the car a concern?
  • How are the roads where you are? Is it all paved highway, or do you sometimes use metalled or unpaved roads?
  • Is the car going to need to cope with really cold weather?
  • Should the car have 4wd?
  • Is the car going to be mostly used for really long journeys, or is it going to be doing lots of stop/start stuff and just around town all the time like a taxi or delivery car?
Without having answers to any of the above, I'd be going for something with a fairly unstressed engine.
If you're going to be spending significant time in the car, it better be a nice place to be, inside.
On that basis I'd have a recent, diesel S-class (not one from the Mercedes "bad time" when marketing and accounts started taking over from the engineers)... but that's for our roads and driving conditions. More info on the questions above and similar topics would help.

Diesel would be fine, hard to find good used cars though.
Below $25K preferably.
All paved.
Yes, it's cold!
No 4WD required, just good snow tyres.
100km per day, some highway, some stop start.

I was also looking at S-Classes, but can only afford the ones from the bad years...

My 2003 V70 D5 is just approaching 150000 miles. It had an injector and intercooler at about 100000 and an ignition switch at about 130000 but has been generally pretty reliable over the years.

It's one of the most comfortable and relaxing cars I've had the pleasure to own and is probably pretty much run in now - a bit of a barge, but it can move when I ask it to.

In contrast we finally got rid of our MPV last week - at 90000 miles it seemed to be racking up every conceivable mechanical failure. Swapped it for an 88000 mile Mondeo which feels much more modern and reliable, and a nice wad of cash too (electronically speaking)

Most Audi RS2s are well on their way to an intercept with Proxima Centauri by now.

LOL

Actually, I've looked more into older Lexus LS's, I think one of them might fit the bill.

My W211 is sitting at 232k and it's had lots more than pads discs and oil, counted up the receipts over the last 4 years £24.5k

It's a ZF for the Bentley, the A8 and the Phaeton, isn't it? - but not the same model.

Toyota Prius-yip, quite a few are 300K miles and above. The engines are unstressed and the hybrid bit lasts well. In canada, where diesel isnt common you'd struggle to find anything that is likely to last as long as the Prius!

Any Lexus

petrol Saabs are supposedly good for 300K miles..

Mazda or Ford with the 2 litre engine

Obviously an Old Merc 190E 2.6 or W124 can do 300K plus too!

£24.5k over 4 years. In maintenance alone? Or including purchase price and insurance, tax etc?

Bit to sensible perhaps, but Audi A2? Best in 2004 or 2005 vintage with either the 1.4 MPI or TDI 75 PS engine. Won't rust, the (few) parts that will fail are from the Polo/Fabia platform, no depreciation to speak of, at least as practical as a Golf and actually not bad to drive at all (especially the TDI => NM/kg ratio wink.
