Monster 4,000hp diesel to star at Goodwood

Massive new Cummins diesel will be the most powerful engine ever to feature at the Festival of Speed

Cummins, the manufacturer of commercial diesel engines, is to showcase its brand-new QSK95 'Hedgehog' diesel engine at the Festival of Speed. But why present a diesel motor designed for commercial use at a festival that celebrates all things seriously rapid?

Because, whatever your views on diesel as a means of motive power, we reckon you'll agree that this is a monster of an engine. The vital statistics speak for themselves, really: 16 cylinders, 95 litres of swept capacity, 4,000hp and 11,800lb ft of torque. A Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi it is not...

OK, so it's perhaps not as compelling as the 3,424hp, 27.9-litre supercharged Detroit Diesel V24 we spotted last year but come on, any engine that's significantly larger than a grown man and has the equivalent power of 16 London buses has got to be pretty cool.

Hilariously, Cummins has plans for an even larger version, with four more cylinders and a power output of 5,000hp. Which just seems greedy, given that the 4,000hp version will power the likes of mining trucks capable of hauling up to 400-tonne payloads...

Wasn't there a Top Fuel dragster at Goodwood once? Those things have more than 4000hp.

Probably not as much Torque though.

These guys always have a good stand to look at over the FOS weekend. I wonder if this year they try to pretend this engine is powering an original Mini again scratchchin

Always wondered why Cummins put such a show on at Goodwood. Still can't understand why? They're quite big stands and usually with a few engines on display, but aside from the odd "cor, size of that turbo" there's seems to be little interest...?

I want to put one of these engines into an Ariel Atom.

Will they actually run the engine? Bit pointless if not - anybody could take a plastic model to a car show! RUN IT!

Sent me off on a little wiki tangent that landed at this:

A nice bit of kit, but lets face it it's a tiddler of a diesel engine when you consider the really big ones.

No we will not run the engine simply becouse you need so much stuff or at least a genset skid with intergrated fuel tank and radiator ect ect ...
Surely between them, Steve N and Kevan B can squeeze that lot in the back of their cars??... wink

43HP/Litre? Not really trying is it.

I got out of designing these and went elsewhere to design fun stuff instead.

I suspect the fuel consumption thing is relative, it's never going to be great, but in terms of efficiency, engines of that size with low rpms can be more efficient than your average car IC engine.
