Man Management/General Management courses for beginner
Discussion
Evening
After 16 years in Forensics and an impending employer change...again, I'm thinking about getting a different type of qualification. Some of the people I have worked under have been....different. I say different because I don't want grief if they are reading this!
I've grown up in my job - quite literally. Started at 20 and now 36 and I think management in my department may be something for the future. It's getting good info and a place that does distance learning that I think I need.
Anyone have experience of OU courses in management? or any general advice?
Cheers

Amongst others, the CMI and ILM standout for different reasons. The argument for CMI is that they're Chartered. Both do distance learning, both have Fellowships if you qualify and the CMI has Chartered Manager. PM me if youd like any further info; I have experience with both. Good luck!

My suggestion would be to get some classroom time with other managers. Part of the learning is finding out how others have approached things, adapted etc. I have just kicked off an ILM based course for 20+ of my first line managers. Whilst they all work in the same business they have surprised themselves learning how they all 'manage' differently with varying degrees of success. Some managers are good at the people management whilst others focus on the task/process/output management. You need to cover all the bases.
Thank you both for your replies, I will look further into those.
I'm not in any rush to move up the ladder, but having grown up in the job and working with different managers the idea of managing a department has grown on me. I watch people in the departments and how they interact, act and influence managers to get what they want. I would love to go into more detail but I won't. Some of the managers failings in the past have been so obvious I have felt sorry for them and annoyed.
Maybe it's boredom/disillusionment in my current post but I genuinely believe I can do a good job within a similar department. Too many people, seem to me anyway, to have forgotten the basics of our job and let themselves become influenced by people who don't care about the job.
I guess it's always easy to think you could do a better job than others and you wouldn't allow yourself to forget how things actually work in your relevant department. With an employer change looming and further modernisation on the horizon I think opportunities will come along, so starting some kind of training/qualification now may be of benefit.
Anyway - thanks again.
