Hi there, i have recently made an aluminium fuel tank cover for my tiger cat and after spraying it black im thinking along the lines of covering it with carbon fibre vinyl as i cant afford genuine carbon fibre sheet 1 metre long...i think unless anyone knows of any cheaper alternative???

Why does it need covering with anything?
Leave it painted black...it can't be seen once the car is built anyway.

3m Carbon wrap or similar (cheap as chips on E-Bay) should look great.

My dad and I have used carbon vinyl wrap on some parts of our kit car build - wrote a bit about it on our website; http://johnskitcar.tonyhetherington.com/blog/?page...

make sure you get the 3m dinoc stuff. It goes on better, sticks better and will last longer. I covered my car in it.

I agree entirely with that.

Because we didn't get the 3M stuff, and really regretted it.

Does anyone know how hard wearing the 3M stuff is? I was think of covering some of my interior side panels with it instead of carpet - and I'm worried that paint will scratch getting in and out?

A genuine 150mph on a stoney runway, with no stone chips. Hard wearing enough!? wink

3M Di-Noc is a bit on the grey side IMO and the 'weave' is quite coarse (as in large). I'd definitely recommend seeing some in the flesh before buying some. Lots of people like it but, for me, I'd want something darker with a finer 'weave' and more gloss.

Try 3M Scotchprint 1080...

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Graphi...

This stuff is darker and glossier than Di-Noc.

Tony, just read through your whole site and must say your build looks great!

Great attention to detail, and love the way you overcome some of the problems!

Good luck with the IVA!!

Erm - call me a heathen but why wouldn't you just leave it in aluminium? I'd rather have genuine aluminium than fake CFC. Maybe I'm odd?

Depends what bits we're talking about, but for me too much shiny makes it a difficult car to look at, and not a pretty car. So whether it's painted or wrapped (in anything), it can begin to make the car a little less shiny

Heathen wink

I used the metallic grey stuff, so it looked like metallic grey, nothing like fake carbon. I used it as I don't like cleaning cars and shiny stuff, ally quickly starts to look rough/tarnished.
