AS title - is there any way that you can stop the time of strava ignoring the start-stop element of the ride withough manually pressing stop each time..
Had an absolute blinder of a ride home (about 2 mins quicker than I've ever managed before - damn the person on the Carbon BMC race machine that forced me to ride quickly whistle), and looking at some of my sectos I'm on for pb's, but then the timer keeps running.. - On connect it stops as my 705 is set on auto start / stop, so was wondering if you can configure Strava to only use the moving time rather than the overal as it seems too?
Cheers,
Rolls

Strava shows both moving time and elapsed time for a ride. The average speed is moving average so doesn't include time stood still.

So do you see a difference between moving time and elapsed time on your particular ride? I presume you are uploading your 705 data to Strava and not using the Strava phone app?

Yeah, both downloaded direct from my 705 -
Garmin connect shows : Time :40.02 Moving:39.36 Elapsed: 44.56
Strava shows : Moving time : 41.03 Elaspsed : 44.56

I just don't understand how the moving time can be a minute and a half diff on each - are there any settings i'm missing?

On another note, it's ashame Garmin don't do sectors like Strava - their set-up is better IMO smile

Try submitting a support ticket to get an explanation (or acknowledgement of a bug...) they've been pretty good when I've done so in the past:

Is there a setting (on either) that says what a "stop" is? Is it 0mph or is it anything below a set level? If they have different definitions of a "stop" then you'll get a discrepancy in your times.

Well my Garmin stops slightly before you actually come to a total halt I think.

Sometimes it shows 0.1 to 0.4 mph when still, which I think is a result of gps inaccuracy thinking you are moving slightly.

For the sectors, it will only ever use total time, not moving time (this stops people doing a longer section as a sequence of short sprints).

As others have pointed out, I suspect the disparity in moving time between Strava and Garmin is that Garmin pauses at a pre-defined slow speed, whereas Strava probably counts anything other than 0mph as moving.

ETA - you can definitely change the auto-pause threshold on the Edge 500 and 800, so I presume it'll be there somewhere for the 705.

And this is what annoys me banghead- didn't realise thats how strava works things out - the sector in particular I want to see how I did on was along the a20, with a set of lights at the end - you inevitably get stuck 10 / 20 meters from the lights (and sector end) behind a lorry or such and have to wait, so thats whats hurting my times! - doh!!
I'll have a look for the settings on my 705 too - cheers!

If you want, you can create your own segments and make the finish point just short of the obstruction (I've done this a few times in similar situations to yours). About 10 minutes after you create the segment, it should have populated with other people's times and you can compare yourself to them.

Or just keep working to the end of the segment - you might get squashed by a bus but at least you'll set a PB that you can look at in hospital! wink

Seriously though, if you want to race and set PBs, why not race and set PBs? I'm sure your local cycling club will be able to help.

Already do race wink - this is just training smile - not going to be silly and ride like a tt to the end of the segment if traffic won't allow (seeminging unlike a load of people that you see on the commute!) - Have now set up another segment so I can actually see how I'm doing without having to worry about traffic!
Cheers for all the help chaps smile
