A mate proudly sent me a text tonight telling me about the 2008 Focus Style he's bought himself. He believes the car has alloys, I've tried to tell him they are sculptured wheels and he won't listen, he's adamant they are alloys.

This may seem trivial, however the car has been advertised as having alloys, which he's really pleased about. I've told him to physically check, he just won't listen.

No, I'm hardly jealous. He's a mate, I just don't want him believing he's bought something he hasn't. I've just suggested he physically check.

tbh 'alloys' are st.

I see no benefit in them over steelies until very large amounts of money are handed over.

The cult of the alloy wheel has been sold to you good and proper, and unfortunately most of the british public has bought in to it. Bring back the steelie.

That's a different debate.

I'm just stating the car has been advertised and sold with a feature it does not have.

Is it one of those wheel types, where the wheel trim sits over the steel wheel spokes so the steel wheel can't be seen behind therefore given the illusion of alloys? Some Vauxhalls have them too.

Especially the "bigger the better" angle. Hence so many cars with shocking ride quality. A BMW on runflats with sports suspension would be my idea of hell!

Yes, I believe that to be the case. I'm almost certain of it.

I sold a 2007 Focus C-Max Style last year which had sculptured wheels , they look very similar and that's why I've tried to encourage him to check.

If by sculptured wheels you mean steel wheels then I guess that's pretty easy to tell nowaways? I don't believe many manufacturers even use steel wheels anymore unless it's on the most basic models. Most "sculptured wheels" comes with plastic wheel covers to disguise them.

These new style steels with alloy look hub caps are quite clever. The looks of alloys but the cheapness and replace-ability of steels & hubs.

You can tell but at a glance they don't look half bad.
