I want to get the plate off my first car, i sold the car on, but i know the people who own it now have sorn it,and would sell it back to me.
I just want to buy the car for the purpose of taking off the numberplate to keep, and put on my car as the car is sorn how do you do this?

i dont really want to spend the money to tax and insure it when the car is days from going to the scrappy ( Car is a 1994 corsa)

Im under the impression that it needs to have tax and an MOT for a plate transfer to happen (both vehicles)

Deffo on the mot but think it can be transferred while the donor is on SORN, certainly SORN is OK for retention with certain limitations - the following text is quoted from the DVLA site:
"However, if the vehicle is not taxed, you can still apply to retain provided:
there is no break between the date the tax disc runs out and the start of the SORN
and the tax disc run out no more than 12 months before the date you apply "
