I was in the middle of enjoying Dexter series 2 last night when a nice lady from virgin media phoned and sold me an ugrade to my broadband (from 10mbps to 30mbps)and added Virgin TV with a Tivo box to my package. I am an exisiting phone and broadband customer but have managed to resist the cable TV until now as the package price seemed very good.

I was just wondering about a couple of things and maybe other virgin customers can help - I did search but couldn't find much, plus the proper ph search is down...

I see you can watch films and series box sets which appeals but presumably you have to pay extra for these so how much is a latest release film to watch? or a series box set? Are older films free or cheaper? Does the cost just get added to your monthly bill?

I think I am getting the 500gb box, however I may call to complain as it seems they are offering the 1tb box online with the same package, although not with the discounted three months. However I don't want to pay more so will 500gb be enough or will I get annoyed because it will fill up quickly? Although I suppose you will eventually fill any amount of storage...

I believe there are apps such as facebook do these work well on Tivo or just a gimmick?

Finally I just redecorated and hid all the cable from the last time virgin came round to install the broadband, will they be putting in new cables for the faster broadband or will they use the exisitng? I guess I will definately need an new cable put in for the TV...

Any other info much appreciated.

Cheers biggrin

500gb is plenty. You'll never watch all of it, and just end up saving stuff for 6 months only to delete it unwatched.

Thanks wormburner, although they have now confirmed it will be the 1tb box.

It seems the films on FilmFlex start at £1.99 is that for latest releases also?

If they are changing you too a superhub then be aware the wifi signal from it is terrible so you will need to try to keep your existing bridge.

Wifi from my superhub is as good as the standalone kit that I have in the house.

Yes I think they are supplying a super hub, so are you saying that I need to keep the current wireless router and run it in tandem?

Some of the box set type stuff is available for free as part of your package, depending if you're on the M, L or XL pack for the TV. Tends to be mainly older stuff though.

Its a known issue that is struggles with areas with heavy wi-fi coverage and also struggles with mixed wi-fi types.

The connection to my tablet & iphone via the superhub are very strong but speeds are 56k like. I find it impossible to watch iplayer/4od etc on tablet or iphone since changing to the superhub.

Yup, can confirm the superhub struggles with Wi-Fi here too... fine downstairs, but upstairs coverage is very poor. I have a separate wireless access point hard wired into the Virgin hub, and effectively use their box as a modem only.

So is there any point in using the superhub, it sounds like I would be better off using my exisitng modem and wireless router...

They upgraded me from the 10 meg service to the 60 meg service - hence why I got the new one.

Not sure if the older modem works with the higher speeds.

According to the technician that fitted mine, you can't use the older modem at the higher speeds.

I too have gone down the road of using it purely as a modem with it plugged in to my existing wifi router. It didn't need any new cabling as it was attached to the same co-ax as the old one.

Thanks. I was looking forward to having just one smart looking box instead of the two ugly ones I have now, oh well...

I got one of the new superhubs installed a few months ago and have to say my wireless reception is fine. Only thing to check is that the channel its set to isn't getting interfered with by your neighbours wireless signals.

I had the call last night as a 50mbps user now being upgraded to 100mbps for no more £££, I also only have the phone & broadband, they offered me the tv for free and for £5 pm a 1tb TiVo, so I have finally given in to the pay tv which I have resisted for years. The Humax box will be relegated to the bedroom after many years good service.
