Saab 9-3 2.2 tid. Any good?
Discussion
I used to be a sales consultant for Saab, and in my experience the 2.2Tid is a fairly solid lump. A little be unrefined in comparison with the 1.9Tid that followed, but without the constant hassle of coked-up swirl manifolds, EGR valves, diesel-in-sump, etc etc etc that the later lump always seemed to be subject to.
The 9-3 drives well and is a very comfortable car so I'd say go for it.

I bought a Saab 9-3 2.2 TiD. I sold it again within a few months as a grew to dislike it so much - or at least, certain things about it.
- noisy and unrefined engine
- quite slow actually
- squeaks and rattles from cabin
- poor build quality in general, particularly the electrics
- crap stereo
On the plus side the seats were terrifically comfy and the climate control was also very good. And it's a nice looking car. But the above just annoyed me too much so I got rid. Essentially it's an expensive Vauxhall. I replaced it with a Passat which was essentially a cheap Audi

Thanks. I'll essentially be buying it for my old man, who cares not a jot about refinement or creature comforts. This car will seem too advanced for him if anything. As long as it's dependable he'll be happy.- noisy and unrefined engine
