Right...I've about 2500pounds flying around now (thanks for the bonus boss!!) and a two week holiday coming up without plans. I think its about time my bog standard 4.0l serp engine got more attention than just a paint or polish.

Things to keep in mind:
I would like to keep options open for increasing capacity at a later date...(or would it be better to throw a 4.6l used lump in now??).
I can't supercharge or so as "Ze German authorities" won't allow that, but any internal mods won't be instantly recognized and are therefore okay.

What should I do?...where should I start? What would you lot do?

Braided brake lines

That should keep you busy

Are there any regulations on exhausts noise/emissions?
Good gains to be had from removing the main cat
http://www.actproducts.co.uk/shop/silencing-manifo...

maybe spend some on the suspension as having it handle better can be just as much fun as faster straight line speed?

I can't remove the big cat due to the emission zone regulations here in germany and noise levels. An ACT system is already fitted ... I guess I could remove the pre-cats though.

Suspension has already been uprated and the alignment corrected. Braided lines and a Cosworth brake conversion are also already in place.
Uprated cooling system/rad has been completed and smooth bore induction pipes are also already in place.

I'm guessing anyone can fit the chip but is programming it a job for a specialist or could any garage here in Germany (or myself) do this?

A used and checked 4.6 block.
A set of V8D stage 4 heads.
Real Steel Typhoon cam
Ported manifold
Bored and shortenened trumprt base.

All the above will give you about 275 horses at least with good torque.
Still run standard ECU with a 450 chip.

More can be done when funds allow.

GM ls3 436hp 428 ft lbs torque and lighter than a Rover. Cheap power if you compare it to getting a rover to that spec.

Changing to an LS? engine is not an option here in germany due to regulations and grief.
I don't want to really change the capacity right now because that would involve being without my engine for ages whilst its getting milled out (thinking about the paperwork stuff, I don't really want to swap the block and have the paperwork hassle of re-registering a differetn number.

If I fit stage 3 or 4 heads to a 4.0, can I bolt these onto a 4.6 later if I decide to mill my block out in a few years...or are the heads completely differetn too?

Ported manifold and shortened trumpets are easy enough to do I'd have thought. Couple with de-precat manifolds and stage 3 heads may be nice? If I mill out the trumpet base and manifold to 44mm as well, then all of this could still be used with an enlargered block at a later date couldn't it?

I have a Mark Adams Tornado performance chip coming available soon.

It's been configured by Mark himself on the rolling road for my 1996 4.0 litre, I'll probably pass it on to the new owner complete with my ECU to give them an easy plug & play performance upgrade.

Five minutes to plug the ECU in, and away you go.

So how much are you selling the chip for ? i sold mine for £150 because im not greedy, that was in the days when Mr Adams did the service of sending you back the revised best guess map for £25 ,now charging more than triple that.

The 14CUX is needs to be removed ,your so restricted..

You dont need to change the block, or have it engineered, the extra cc comes from a stroker crank, rods and pistons. This is the first place to start IMHO as the pocketed pistons will dictate the cam and this is where the power comes from.

Strip, get it top hatted, £800.00, sell the ancilleries, new heads and cam and you have a good start.

Credit for selling your 4.0 for about £1500.00 and the whole process is quite economical.
