'Temporary' protection film for the front

I've seen the products like Ventureshield and the like but as my car already has stone chips it's not really worth paying hundreds to protect it further.

My question is generic about car protection but in my case the question is raised because I'm thinking of doing a CarLimits day where I'm worried about stone chips.

I don't care how the car looks whilst I'm doing it so I'm wondering if I could get some vinyl 'wrap' and do a DIY covering of the front and wings. Is this even possible or are there products out there that I could use instead?

And 'no', I'm not going to get a bonnet bra...
