Next door (semi detached) have a staffy that is nothing short of a pain in the arse! It barks everytime someone walks past, all we ever hear is them shouting it's name and worst of all when they are out it barks and howls absolutely non stop.

Since the owners marriage has broke up the dog on its own alot more. The woman goes out all weekend basically, and the dog just does not bloody stop, and this could be from 5pm right through until she comes home the next day, my partner can tune it out, I however cannot and it drives me insane! and the spare room at the other side of the house is often mine when the bloody dog won't shut up!

I have confronted her politely asking was she aware it did this, and she said "what do you want me to do? cut its voice box out?" so thats what Im dealing with. I politely told her that's fine is thats her attitude I will just report her nuisance dog without trying to be nice about it.

the real concern is that today I see she has a new puppy, another staffy and well of course now im dreading what is to come!!

who would I report it to? can I report it? not to mention the dog being left alone for over 12 hours (at very least) on regular basis, am I better to just put up with it as I don't really want her starting her all night parties again just to be home for the dog!

ahhhhhhh!! advice pls!

For the next 3 weeks, every time the dog barks, make a note of the time and the duration of the barking. Keep a full record. Then report it to the council.

You have my sympathy, as this is one of my pet hates too. (no pun intended)

You can complain to the local council, for both the reasons you mention. Noise and the dog being alone. They'll steer you to the right department.

I live in Asia, where dogs barking is supposed to some sort of 'good' thing, and the locals are totally immune to it, don't even hear it. They'll sit in a room with the dog barking three feet away, happily watching TV, totally unaware the dog is there. rage

"Oh, the dog is keeping the evil spirits away by barking" rolleyes

Translated into English: I'm too fkin' stupid and retarded to notice the noise.

Evil spirits away! lol maybe but it drives me insane! my other half can tune out but he is half deaf at the best of times lol, but I hear every bloomin bark and howl and can tell what room its in etc.

the only problem with complaining is that she is well, a bit of a chav, and im scared that something will happen to my rabbits/cat or the cars or something in return, I have heard some scary stories about her and what she gets up to. Im not scared to approach her, like I said I have done and got the attitude that she didn't give a damn. You read so many stories about neighbour feuds.... tbh she is the same age as me (34) but acts like an 18 year old with her partying etc, always falling out with people etc. I have already approached her last year about the all night parties and thankfully she stopped those and goes out now! so what if she goes back to the parties....

what to do what to do....hmmmmm

It's possible. Or the puppy will learn to bark at everything by copying the other dog.

However, the council will want to see a record and that's what they would ask you to do anyways. Once you have a record they might even come round your house to sit during some of the times you have recorded the dog going nuts and witness it for themselves. Then they can take action.

Might be worth taping the row too, or even video, if you can see the dog in the window etc.

When we lived in the UK there was a guy 50 yards down the road with a huge Alsatian that barked all day, in the front window of the house. It was a bit annoying, but not really loud enough to complain about. I bet his neighbours hated him though.

Do they run around the streets unfettered there too? That winds me up. I'm too humane to put down poison, and too cheap to buy a shotgun, but both have crossed my mind.

OP: Perhaps you are an evil spirit, or a ghost?

This one is terrible in the garden at barking at people, when I've had guide dog puppies here for training this staffy would often jump the fence and corner me with the puppy, barking at me! I was terrified and basically had to stand and shout the owners names til they came and shouted the dog in! said mutt does this to many passing dogs/owners and you now notice that they cross the street or pick the dogs up!

the only noisey buggers in the village and they of course they have to live next door to me! rolleyeslaugh

What you want is one of these products. Next time it barks, hold this over the fence & press it! I have not come across ANY dog that doesn't respond to this & after a while they do get the message & the barking will stop.

As said ,make a record of barking. Get Council Env Noise dept involved. If dog jumps fence , try the police, though I fear you won't get much joy .We had one locally ,that jumped the fence & attacked a Westie .Police involved with vet report .Owners warned. Same dog tried to clamp on to my dogs neck, till it got a size 7 ( I love dogs, but mine takes precedent over some out of control mutt).Again police complaint. It jumped fence and tried it again with mine. Owner threatened violence if I intervened. Again police complaint.Council dog warden no powers ,unless dog outside fence off lead ,but most of their problems are Staffs.
I then decided that next time ,I'd be the one to get bitten ,and the owner charged .So far,the dog has not been seen .
As for noise - it'd would have to be measured on a council approved device. But ,if the dog jumps the fence and gets aggressive - I used to have my phone on video when passing the problem premises ,just in case.

Excellent idea, this is what I'd recommend if you can get somewhere the dog can hear the compressed air.

I wouldn't say 'any dog' though, mine doesn't give two hoots (labrador) but more 'stressy' dogs like staffies/lurchers/collies/terriers it works a treat.

these are great idea but the most nuicance is when they are out and the dog is barking all night, so it wouldn't work in that case!

You have my sympathy, we have a yappy dog next door, it barks on and off from 6am until midnight but it sets off a relay of yapping amongst neighbouring dogs as well. We had a dog for 15 years, we taught him not to bark more than once, it wasn't hard to do.

I can sympathise. The neighbours at my old house had a poor little dog that was chained up in the back yard all night, every night, and it yapped and howled all night, every night.

RSPCA couldn't/wouldn't do anything. Only option is the local council's Environmental Health dept. You will need to keep a diary to prove a statutory nuisance. They will then eventually serve a noise abatement notice on the owners, all being well which then means they can be prosecuted if the nuisance continues.

Unfortunately, the neighbours in my case were travellers and nobody was willing to get involved. Hopefully you will have more luck.
