Is this the same lens?

Nope, not the same lens at all.

The first is the af-s with VR, the second is a much older cheaper lens without its own focus motor & no VR.

G - cheap 'n' cheerful
ED - better (discontinued)
VR - best

The good news is that the VR version is more than 4 times better. MPB have some for £319...

ED is a great lens. I still use it from time to time. Buy a second hand one, you won't be disappointed.

My example had quite pronounced CA.

Fussiness factor excepted, the ED is screwdrive so slow to focus - and will be manual focus on entry-level bodies.

Yep, that's the good one. That and the D7000 and lots of aeroplanes will be a good test of technique
