Reverse Gear Burning Smell

When i reverse the car using the clutch i get this burning smell (clutch burning), i am aware this will happen if i hold the car on the clutch for a long time, although i seem to get this straight away and in tight spots i have to use the clutch to reverse the car slowly, i was wondering if anyone else has this problem or is there somthink am doing wrong. i never had this problem with any other car.

Had this on my manual V8 and found if you are on the flat or slight incline if you don't use any throttle and slowly let the clutch out no smell. Think the anti stall kicks in .

The same happens with mine and everytime I get the smell I come out in a cold sweat about the cost of a clutch replacement!

I get this too, and the associated cold sweats thinking about wear. I'm not sure why the car is so difficult to reverse without burning the clutch or stalling it. I only stall it when people are watching, of course...

It's one of those - they all do that sir moments ( well many do!) there is a warranty fix if it particularly bad where they can reduce the smells coming into the cabin, so if it is bad talk to your friendly dealer.

Does the warranty "fix" do anything with the clutch? Or just prevent the smell coming into the cabin?

Hi Bob, as far as I'm aware it just reduces the smell in the cabin.

Actually, I've found that as I get used to the car it happens less and less. Maybe just one of those quirks you have to get used to.

It's down to the tall reverse gear
It's scary on ASM1 cars as you have no control and creep mode takes over
I found myself NEVER reversing round tight corners or up inclines - it helped alot!
ASM2 has a "normal" reverse ratio and is much better.

yh i found that you do need to keep the revs up to make sure you dont stall the car aswell, well atleast its not only me, but at the rate i have to reverse to park it dont look to good for the clutch, Do you know what the dealer does to stop the smell?

Need to practice NOT keeping the revs up. Sounds counter intuitive, but once its moving come off the throttle completely. On a level surface it will reverse from standstill with no throttle, even on small inclines, once moving it doesn't need any revs.

It may not need any revs but it don't arf accelerate fast backwards. Make sure you keep your foot near the brake

Reputed to do over 60MPH in reverse! Must try it sometime with a Satnav for speed reading.

Says it goes the same speed backwards as forwards, although being a Nissan Leaf that is probably 10 mph

Yes, but on steep inclines, there's just no way to avoid the smell.

I think the dealer just seals the gaps so the smell doesn't get into the cabin. Suppose that could help your peace of mind, but it doesn't help the clutch at all.

There was a packaging problem inside the gearbox when they chose the forwards ratios, there wasn't room for a low reverse gear, so it got one close to 2nd gear, which is why you have to slip it sometimes, and why it goes like crazy when you let the clutch out completely.

I now go backwards down the slope into my garage, keeping the car in neutral, so that I can come up the slope in 1st. This is the only car I've ever done like that, but it will probably add 10k miles to the life of the clutch.

The gearing is very similar to 2nd

Guess i'm screwed i have to reverse up the drive every time i park up

Can't you go up the drive in first then reverse out?
