Quick question - what level of oil usage is normal/acceptable on a 4.3?

Mine uses ~1 litre every 1000 or so miles and am being told by the supplying dealer that they consider this normal.

Hello there, it depends on how it is driven. Lots of high speed and acceleration (most Griff driving!!) does use a bit more oil. As a guide my 4.3 Griff (74k miles) used less than a litre over the last year (approx 2000 miles). Rgds, Pete

Thanks.

Mine is smoking on start up, I suspect oil is seeping into the cylinders when stood.

Depends what oil you're using too

Hi Dave, I get no smoke on start up on my 4.3, so this does suggest something awry somewhere. It is a good point made by
RussellMC, if you are using too thin an oil or one that is not up to the task, this could cause the smoking?

1l every 1000 miles is certainly within the known and accepted range without factoring in anything else. Oil type, use and engine age will obviously come into play. Your cars smoking habit sounds like it may do to smile

No idea what the garage put in at service.

I've been topping up (so it is now a large proportion of the content!) with semi-synth 10-40 from valvoline mainly as that was what I could get that was listed as fit for that engine on the opie oil thread.

Hi Davemac, I use a 15:50 on my 4.3! The 10:40 you mention seems a bit thin to use to me? Does the garage you use know TVR's OK? Some garages just use what stock bulk oil they have? regards, Pete

I use 5w50 fully synthetic and use about 1/3 ltr per 1000 miles. I think the leather owners manual has a page on expected oil consumption (I'm at work so can't check).

I am sure the Cerbera I used to have used nearly a litre per 1000 miles and this was "as designed" and normal usage...normal for a TVR anyway.

Just got back from LeMans and I dropped 3mm on the dip stick from Max mark... and covered 1200 miles...
Millers CFS 10/50 fully synthetic... smile

Hi Tim, that is about my oil consumption also, over about 2000 miles have put in just over half a litre.

I used 0.75 litres on my last 2163 mile European tour.

That's just shy of 3000 miles per litre, but there was a significant amount of 80mph light throttle motorway cruising on this trip which keeps the oil consumption very low when compared with average mixed style driving.

In normal use I get through about a litre every 2000 miles, which in my book is pretty good for a large 8 cylinder engine designed in the late 1950's.

3mm over 1200 miles, that's only about 1/8th of a litre. You need to drive it harder, it's a TVR not an Audi! tongue out

But, as I think has been pointed out already it all depends on the driving/journey. I have been on long(ish) drives on boring motorways (250+ miles) sitting at 2000-2500RPM and had no noticeable drop in oil but then my normal driving is 30-40 mile recreational blasts on a/b roads at high (but legal officer) speed.

Here is a quote form the rv8r.co.uk site discussing the RV8's used in TVR's which sounds right to me:

rv8r.co.uk said:
There is no overall ‘normal’ oil consumption as it varies from car to car. For a low mileage car used on a road, a litre of oil every 1000 miles is not excessive for an RV8 but I would do some checks if it dropped to half that.

That's more like it!

This world isn't going to drain itself of oil on it's own - we need dedicated drivers.

Heartening, cheers.

It has been given a damn good thrashing recently, including seeing just how far into the odometer the speedo would actually go. (beat of a cheat, long downhill section of very smooth motorway.)

My initial concerns were than the consumption was mostly down to seepage past valve seals, which from years of fast bike ownership get expensive.

TVRPower recommend 10w40 semi synth for RV8 engines. Minefield subject I know but as they built them they are my reference point.

The 4.3`s have the old style valve seal which are as good as useless when you see what they are and how they fit, so no doubt this part of the engine will contribute to some of the oil usage. From what you are using though i wouldnt worry.

How many engines have V8D taken in bits to find the big-ends and mains worn through the white metal bearing onto the copper backing at less then 50K miles due to low quality / thin oil being used?? Rob showed me a few when I was there and said its quite common ....eek
Mine were on their way so I had them replaced but the better protection you can give, the longer everything will last......

I totally agree - using a suitable oil is critical to engine health. Are you saying 10w40 semi-synth is not suitable? I run a freshly rebuilt and relinered 4.5BV - if I'm using the wrong oil I'd like to know now....
