Rick Stein Restaurants

We're going to St Merryn for a week next month, and I thought we'd take the opportunity to sample a Rick Stein Restaurant or two. Can anyone recommend their favourite for:
a) A kid friendly lunch (one 9 yr old, 2 x 15 year olds) and
b) A "romantic" (me and the missus aren't that big on romance
) night out for two?

) night out for two?I'd avoid RS for kid friendly and take them to Jamie Olivers 15 instead.
For you and the Mrs The Seafood Restaurant is his main place and I liked it (it gets mixed reviews on here). The Cafe was pretty good and less formal (none are very formal) that's next door to Paul Ainsworth though. Also in the same area is Nathan Outlaw which is supposed to be superb.

My wife took me down to The Seafood restaurant for my birthday last year - we stayed a few nights in one of the rooms and it was very nice (although you might argue the rooms were a little small).
Didn't have dinner there, but the breakfast menu was superb.
We ended up eating at Paul Ainsworth's no6 - and I can genuinely say it was one of the nicest meals I have ever had (as a PH forum member I dine exclusively from Michelin starred restaurants...).
That might be worth a look?

We go to Padstow quite a lot and we often go to St Petroc's. It's his hotel which has a French Bistro restaurant. They do amazing steaks and fairly authentic French Bistro food with a good wine list as well. I've not been to the Fish Restaurant, but St Petroc's seems to be a bit more relaxed and less pretentious.
Also, last time we went Rick himself came and sat at the table behind us and had a full meal and tried several different wines that had been recently added to the list. It was really good to see that he is very involved with his restaurant despite not being in the kitchen.

Im suprised no one has suggested the Cornish arms pub - It is walking distance from St Merryn and is owned by RS, lovely food not too expensive and great for the kids. You cant book though so best to get there early!

As others have already mentioned, his pub, just outside Padstein is great for the family - go for the lamb curry!
For romantic meal I would go Paul Ainsworths No.6 place rather than RSs - the seafood restaurant is alright but the dining room is incredibly busy all the time. Where as Pauls place its alot more intimate.

Thanks for the responses, people. I'm more confused than ever now! It's looking like Jamie's 15 for lunch (if I can convince the tight arse b.i.l. to stump up his share - forgot he was coming too) and the Cornish Arms, or the fish Restaurant, or any of the others for an evening meal. Probably the Cornish Arms, as we can stagger back from there.
I would say go to Rick's Fish n Chips for some battered Monkfish tails and chips.. amazing and yes its kid friendly
for the special meal you cant go wrong with No6.. I would rate that higher than Rick Stein's places. Have been to Padstow a few times, last time we stayed at a Duchy of Cornwall manor house. Was the most amazing place i've stayed in.
