Quite simply I need something automatic and a decent size for the next 6 months. V small daily commute plus 1 day a week a 100 mile round trip, so not massive milage and so mpg not really an issue. Was budgeting up to 6k but then started thinking sheds/bangernomics as it is a 6 month motor and then will re-evaluate.

So, is it awful? Worth a punt? Not looking for driving pleasure, just something big, wafty, and robust for a few months. Seen the 2.7 diesel but they are all 2k more and the petrol I use would come in way under that for the difference so no point in going for the CDI Merc engine.

ANyone got any real world experience of this car in 4.0 guise or 4.7v8?

Cheers.

I like Jeeps. Recently (only just sold) a 4.0 XJ Cherokee. The Grand is a brilliant 4x4 IMO. The 4.0 will like a drink mind. But comfy and good handling for a 4x4, lighter and more nimble (and faster) than a Disco or RR of the same year.

Some parts can be pricey unless you shop around (or ship from the US) and Jeep UK are bloody useless. But I'd have another Jeep in an instant.

Yup had a 4l one for around 16+ months now. First 4 x 4 & I love it. I needed something I could use as a builders lorry whilst doing some work on the house.
They need looking after which is not cheap. The service schedule is every 7.5K & is quite extensive. I have a local ex-Chrysler mechanic do mine (Terry @ Mid-Kent Chrysler) & he is great. Typical service is around £140 for a minor & £250ish for a major.
I get just sub 19mpg which is a mix of short journeys & motorway. At that mileage it should have had a gearbox oil service (every 90K) & a big fluids change in axles, transfer box, brakes as well as engine. The 4l straight 6 lump is bullet proof & is also very good if you want to LPG it whereas the V8 is known to be a bit fragile for that.
Check everything, the electric seats, the a/c as they are prone to the blend doors breaking in the dash which means NO hot air. The front tweeters die & rattle like hell, which is a pain as they come with a 180W upgraded stereo, which sounds fantastic, check the fader hasn't been wound to the rear! Check the axles are OK, the rear diff is sensitive to oil, they must have synthetic oil in them. Also it should have the later front callipers which are Akebono, not the rubbish ATE ones.
The door panels on mine rattle like an airfix kit because the clips are broken. I have the fix here which is new clips from the people who do the tweeter kits in the US.
Some bits are extortionately expensive but are much cheaper from the after market.

Assuming I threw mine away now & excluding fuel which I don't pay for mine has cost 41.3 pence per mile over 15,500miles. As I reckon it is still worth a resaonable amount as it has been serviced by the book then say it is worth £2K then it has cost me 28ppm which I reckon is cheap motoring.

Good looking vehicle that year too. Its one of those cars like the subaru impreza where every newer generation gets uglier and uglier.

Thanks gents, going to ring and have a look - as a mega-barge it ticks all the boxes for the next few months - I don't mind a few electrics not being pukka but I may take a mechanic to check the serious stuff around axles etc. The way I see it, if I got that for 1600ish and only put 5k miles on it, it's not going to cause too many issues to the wallet and will be more fun to own than chucking 4 grand on a 2006 VAG estate of some sort!

I have got 2 Jeeps - I recently brought 300bhp/ton's XJ Cherokee 4litre for messing about in and getting muddy,

I have also had for 2yrs a 4.7V8 and had it converted to LPG (with valve saver as this is what causes problems if not fitted).

In 2yrs its been the most reliable car I have owned, only niggle was loosing all gears apart from 3rd, still towed 2ton of caravan from the south of France with just 3rd. Turned out to be a throttle position sensor and sourced for £30.

I have a friend who has a 4litre grand cherokee and its done 190k.

This is mine Grand Cherokee ready to help a friend out on a special day.
