I know this topic has cropped up on here before, but I thought I would ask their Customer Service team the question over e-mail and got this back:

Dear Mark,

Thank you for your enquiry about the Pilot Supersport for your vehicle.

There are no dates at the moment for this approval but Michelin and Porsche are working closely to get the homologation passed so that using these High performance Tyres will not invalid your warrantys.

Should you require any further assistance please contact us on 0845 366 1590 (UK & NI) or 0044 (0) 1782 401590 (ROI), quoting the reference number above.

Best Regards
Steve
Consumer Contact Team

How long does this take - we seem to have all been asking the question since this time last year .... frown

I'm still bemused as to why a tyre type invalidates your "warranty", providing all other criteria are met (tread depth, size, profile, speed and load rating etc).

Total con trick to try to get you to buy tyres from OPC.

The EU could make themselves useful for once and ban the practice!

It's not just them. Knowing full well what stance the insurance co will take should the worst happen, would you take the risk?

No motor Insurer could avoid a claim on the basis of non N rated tyres.

it's the case that some Porsche N rated tyres have different load ratings than tyres from the same manufacturer of the same size, width and profile.

N rating is not just all marketing.

Yes it is, buy the correct load.rating, speed rating and correct size and your ok. The SuperSport in nspec will be no different to the regular SuperSport, except for costing more - porsche tax.

I've no doubt the N-rated PSS will differ slightly from the normal ones in some way, whether anyone would be able to tell the difference is another question entirely. I very much doubt it myself.

Do any of the other premium manufacturers run a similar system to Porsche and the N-rating? Ferrari, Mercedes etc? If so, are they as restrictive when it comes to the warranty as well?

I do doubt it - why would they suffer the additional tooling/process costs to make a slightly different, fairly limited amount of tyres, to sell at similar costs to the standard units, when by all the other, already listed and accepted measures of the tyre industry standards, the standard units will be fit for purpose anyway?

Lotus run (or ran) a similar LTS stamped tyre system.

Well my OPC is fairly adamant it will invalidate my warranty and unless I can see cast iron proof to the contrary, I'm not taking the risk.

Bloody annoying, as I need four new boots and the PSS would be the default choice.

That quote is incomplete and the message clearly states that these are no acceptable for cars under warranty.

Agreed magic, the letter specifically says that using PSS WILL invalidate warranty.

As an ex-VXR220 owner myself I'd forgotten about the LTS stuff, good shout. Interestingly though they were different from the normal tyres, on the A048 anyway, somewhere between the reguar Med and Soft options IIRC. Don't recall either Vauxhall or Lotus worrying about the tyre on the car effecting the warranty though.

Kwif Fit's site lists tyres approved by BMW too. I'm sure Ferrari and Maser approve tyres too - where they'd be on warranty claims I don't know though.

ETA - 4 new n-rated PS2s going on my Cayman tomorrow thanks to Costco.

N rated are NOT the same as non N rated. Don't believe the naysayers. If you want confirmation contact GB customer services and ask to bd put in touch with the tyre testing team.

As for MPSS testing, it's been over a year. God knows what's going on.

Interesting, thanks. Do you know what the key differences are? Compound/sidewall perhaps?

It would be nice to see something cast iron on the whole N-rated thing. I'm interested in tyres, so wouldn't just bung any old thing on, but I'd like to see proof of the physical differences between the N and non-N rated on apparently the same tyre.
