Just thinking about the effect salt has on the body... if someone eats a lot of ready meals, would simply drinking more water help? Or exercise to sweat heavily then drink water to rehydrate but don't take salt tablets?

Sadly the best thing to do is not to buy ready meals or processed food (or keep it to a minimum). The wife and I rarely add salt to food and it's astonishing just how much you notice it when eating out etc.

can't comment on the water or sweating but these seem like a lot of effort.

I know the best method is to avoid the stuff.

My real issue is that when I work at one client, they often take me out for lunch... I can't really say to the chef "go easy on the salt" as it's usually from a pub chain menu which means it is likely pre-made in bulk, frozen and nuked to order. biggrin

It suddenly dawned on me that I might be eating too much salt.

I wouldn't worry too much. We don't really know how much salt you should have per day. For example the tts we call a government have called for 4g per day, yet a hospital drip will try to keep you alive with 9g. The only thing we know for sure is no salt = dead.

I just never add any post cooking.

hehe I usually do the opposite; no salt during cooking but add at the table if required.
I expect the chemistry's all wrong though. getmecoat

Ah ok, it was just that you mentioned ready meals, sorry.

The chap above made an interesting point but I would have thought it logical that too much salt isn't good for you. Whether 4g is the limit is questionable but I would have thought it a good idea to keep in as low as possible. Thus you're probably right to wonder.

Given what you describe I'd be looking for the simple meal that you know they can't mess about with and in a smaller portion.

Also depends on how much sweating you do. It's not salt you need. It's Sodium and Potassium. Salt is about 40% Sodium. Salt is like eating carbs to get glucose. Your body needs to process it.

In ready meals and processed food it's not salt you want to worry about, it's Trans Fat. The easy move it not to eat them. I've not touched a read meal since I learned about nutrition for many reasons. Closest I get is supermarket noodles these days...

Sure. Avoidance isn't an option. I'm not prepared to turn down free food!

As for sweating, I train a lot so sweat regularly.

Maybe you're coming to the realisation your days as a male escort are over? hehe

I sense you are relieved. Jealousy can be such an ugly beast. But I've already told you I never kiss them.

I follow this guy on twitter, what he says isn't always conventional science.

This link is to a post specifically about salt, but the others are also interesting.
