I drove through that as the water started rising. I was thinking, "another ten minutes and I'm fked".

Looking at the photos I guess I was right.

My wife saw a Land Rover with a snorkel get flooded last night. The guy must have felt like a right tool!

To be fair if you had a decent bow wave a defender should cope with that depth - just.

It was amazing last night, the water came up so quickly, this morning most of it has gone.
I tried sinking my Disco 4 near Alnwick, all it proved is that the Disco has bigger balls than me!

Why would he? I have a Defender with a snorkel and if my wife and 4 week old were stuck in a flood in the middle of the car, I'd take the landy in and hope. Obviously, I know it's limits, but if it was on the cust, I'd take the chance and just get wet if I got stuck. biggrin

I bet that like a fair few poseur's Defenders, that snorkel was fitted for visual decoration purposes and not actually sealed to the intake pipe with silicone (yes, this does happen quite a lot)

All the breathers need routing too IIRC. Don't the diffs all have breather pipes that need plumbing in too?

If you have a snorkel, can water going into the exhaust cause problems ?

Not if the engine is running. Gasses keep the water out.

Not a Landy buy you can see what I mean in an impressive example.

They do, and mine are plumbed in to the bottom of the snorkel (not the top yet). Yes, I've sealed my airbox properly too. wink

I have a timinig case wading plug in the cabin for when it's needed too. biggrin

This.

When you buy a snorkel, build it up before you fit it to the vehicle, seal one end and fill it with water - most leak like a sieve! Now disassemble it and re-assemble with silicon sealant on every joint and refill with water. Keep doing this until there are no leaks and then fit it to the vehicle! smile

IIRC the standard wading depth for a non snorkel equipped Defender is about 500mm, so that guy is a little over it's capabilities

And don't forget that the car's snorkel is higher than the driver's nose, so sometimes you might want a snorkel for him too.

I had my works Defender wading to the point of my feet getting very wet. As it started getting deeper I bottled it and reversed back. hehe
