I had to collect Son number 1 from work experience last night, so ventured out into the wet Northumbrian contryside. Heading south towards Alnwick I came across a patch of water about 300 yards long. Having just done about 15 miles with floods everywhere I looked and thought Ok that's a bit deeper than the rest, but I should be fine.
So I raised the suspension to Offroad and with testosterone surging ventured forth.....
100 yards in the water was coming over the bonnet....st....past the point of no return I think just keep going.
Right, so now I have water over the windscreen and lapping beside my wing mirrors. Hands shaking slightly I plug on. Emerging the other side to a line of cars, who by now have decided that it really isn't a good idea, are turning around.
Picked son up, car starts and works fine, this morning no problems either.
I still can't work out how water did not get into the important oily bits as the air intakes were covered.
Anyway thumbs up Land Rover it's a cracker!

They're good aren't they. smile

The wading depth is supposed to only be 700mm, so it'll be worth giving it a bit of a check over before you do much more driving... Especially the air filter! At that depth, you may well have ended up with some water getting drawn in but it might just be trapped in the air box.

I have done another 60 miles since with no issues, it started this morning no problem, although I did push the button with trepidation!
Under the bonnet everything seems dry, no water in the battery box etc.

I think I may have got away with it...this time!

Still worth popping the air box off for the 2 minutes it will take and making sure the filter is dry. They are like sponges and can soak up a lot of water. But, as air flows over it, water will come out and could get ingested.

Worse still... It could start sucking soggy air filter in!!!

Will do, not worth wrecking my first new car for a two minute check!

Thanks, mine is only a lowly Discovery 3 though, I still think I will only be able to replace it with a new Disco 4 though, would miss its capabilities too much if I got anything else!!

Agreed!

But I have had plenty of times when it has touched the windscreen too.

The scariest bit is when you get it lapping up the drivers and passenger windows, and say to yourself, I now think this is just a bit too deep!

Enjoy your Disco 4!

Pls, put my mind at rest... Just check the inside of your air-box.

Seconded. I took my old Rangie on an off road course in Wales once. They teach you to make sure you always keep the intake out of the water (hence why people fit snorkels).

OK done! The air filter is clean and dry, so no harm done there.
The whole of the engine bay is covered in a fine silt like dust, a couple of small bits of twig etc have found their way in as well. All in all it looks fine, nothing that a wipe over would not sort out.

Nice one... biggrin

PS. It's always best to give the car a quick once-over check, especially if you've been pushing beyond the design limits. wink

After a weekend of testing 4x4's for a suitable tow car we have finally decided that a Discovery 4 is the only way ahead. Tested XC90 (same interior as my S60 10 years ago), VW Touareg (unless you buy new doesn’t even have Bluetooth), RR / RR Sport etc etc….

The Discovery 4 will tow any caravan we want so no worries about tow weight, seven decent seats

Now I read this and the fun that can be had mind is made up…… Rather like this one...

Try to hold out for the new engine and gearbox if you can. The 255hp engine is superb and I imagine that the resale residual will be better with the newer Kit.
