My car has only been in the garage for a couple of days and I already miss walking past my garage and seeing her in the morning. I perhaps only drive once every week or so but my garage looks and feels very empty...

Ah well, back in a week and will be much nicer to drive with new Gaz Mono suspension & setup, 12k service, MOT and a couple of little niggles (like an annoying low idle/cut out issue for the first couple of miles engine hot or cold).

Roll on next week.

Maybe I should buy another one for these interim periods...

Though not quite the same, when mine was off the road for three months (Oct to Dec) last year for diff out and refurb etc, I had withdrawl symptoms, could not start her because up on stands with exhaust off, nice days in October COULD NOT GO OUT. I had to immerse myself into the refurb; cleaning chassis, waxoiling, changing geabox oil etc, etc.!!!!

I'm not skilled enough to refurb anything that complicated. I just have a big empty garage...nothing to even tinker with...my wife would become more concerned than normal if I start spending my evenings fiddling in the garage at the moment.

Just noticed somebody has had a steal on ebay, a lovely Tuscan just closed at 10k with engine rebuild, looked well kept. Maybe my Griff needs a stable buddie. Although, another griff would make more sense...or a cerb again...I do like the S series for some reason...not a chimp though! Hmmm, really missing my car.

I might go on youtube to listen to RV8's.

Hi Tim, I would very much like an early 6o's Griff 400 to keep my Griff 4.3 company in the garage, but they are megabucks if you can get them! Tuscans are quite a good price at the moment if youlook around, I do like their shape as opposed to the more radical Sagaris. I had considered making a recording of my Griff exhaust noise and creating a phone ring tone! Will keep you posted, Pete

Mmmm, 60's Griff. I did once see one for sale (I think it was a griff) with a shocking fire engine red interior all over, seats, dash, carpet, roof lining etc. My son (who was 4 at the time) was sitting next to me whilst I was browsing on my laptop and shouted "Look at that Dad!", I replied "I know - it's a little bright isn't it" (thinking a little garish), my son said "No Dad, it's perfect".

I know what you mean about the Tuscans - definetly something I like about them:
- Griffith
- Tuscan

Can't quite put my finger on it...

Ummm mI remember some of ex missus parting words.... and some of them went along the lines of..... you think and spend more of that fking car of yours then you do of me...... jesus how selfish women can be hehe

ohh might as well add selfish, and self centered to the list...... yet we went out every week to a restuarant of her choice at my expense, I paid for a £60k extension on her place, treated her kids all the time, took her to intimate family and work do's....... but as I had a hobby that didn't interest her yikes

Right you are!

It might be cheaper than the bill for the work mine has had done over the last week...looking out the window though I should have asked for a body lift and some monster truck tyres put on to get back through all the floods. Bloody weather.

What work are you having done Tim? By the way if you could afford it get a Land Rover Defender 90 to compliment the Griff! Great for winter and the recent wet drought! Pete

Not too much:
  • 12k service
  • MOT
  • ACT smooth bore air pipe and plenum elbow
  • Bunch of annoying little niggles (wiper park switch, ice warning sensor, lambda sensor, drivers window dropped, idle issue on first 2-3 miles of each journey...the list goes on...and on...and on)
  • GAZ mono suspension upgrade and setup
The suspension is going to be the biggest improvement, mine was on original suspension and the handling was awful. Front end feels like it is floating over the road most the time and you get around a corner if you are lucky.

But...back to 3 more sleeps to go...the weather has been so crap the suspension can't really be setup until the roads dry out.

Hmmm, might need another toy to keep me busy. A defender 90 looks fun but I would have to get a tax exempt one with a massive V8. I have a nice L322 petrol range rover 4.4 V8 but tbh I am really getting into my old cars. It's all very nice to be sure you will get to where you are going on a journey but where is the adventure. Have been seriously considering an S series or a 3000M to use an my everyday car. If you reach the place you intended to go when you set off you feel some real accomplishment in a car like that.

I bought an old isuzu trooper just before xmas for £900 - ran it around for 7 weeks before the piston blew and then scrapped it for £650. It cost me £250 for 7 weeks of fun. If I was any better with the spanners I could have fixed it as you can pick up a new piston for £35 and a set of rings for under £60.

Ah well, back to the waiting...

woohoo

She's back. A marvellous drive back this morning in the sunshine and all is well with the world once more.

A few more bits and pieces were done (new front splitter, serp belt, new tyres...another long list) but now she is spot on.

My odd idle issue is cured, revs drop to 750rpm bang on every time now without either getting stuck at 2k or cutting to nothing/stall. The new plugs, smooth bore induction, service or something has made the car pick up much quicker and the new suspension makes it feel like I am driving a different car. It was worth pushing the budget for the mono's the drive home felt planted all the way even on the very bumpy, twisty hilly bends. No more fingers crossed if I make it around a bend or over a white line. Once they have bedded in and I have another setup session they will be even better (or so I have been told).

I think I only managed about 1400 miles (if that) in the car last year, the way it is driving now I may do that in a week!

Bring out the sun...very happy.

Hi Tim, glad you are back in the land of the Griff! And what a lovely morning also where I live. I got up to clear blue sky (what a change from the clouds and rain), so it was in to work in the Griff, top down and enjoying the soundtrack. Just got home this evening, put Griff in garage and guess what, it started raining!!! Anyway, it seems like you have a well sorted motor now. I really noticed the changes in mine every time I carried out another upgrade, service or replacement. Yes the smooth bore induction definitely makes a difference and changing the old emission/breather pipes for quality silicon kept in place with s/s clips cured my odd idling. I designed, made and fitted my own splitter and what a difference that made. So welcome back and enjoy. All the best, Pete
