Having sold my VX220T to fund my first house purchase I am finally in a position to buy another nice car. I loved my VX220 and had planned to buy another one but thought I would have a good look around first. I have around 10-12k to spend, less being the preference but wouldnt let an ideal car go.

List currently stands at:

VX220T - Great to drive, running costs reasonable.
TVR Chimaera - Not quite as hardcore but great V8 sound track, and hugely practical for weekends away etc.
Z4M - Would have to be an everyday car to fund the extra, worried would become a bit less of an experience id daily use.

Any other suggestions would be great. Many Thanks.

You have Chimaera on the list. NO other suggestion is needed.

You could consider a TVR S Series V8 (an S4).. I'm just looking at one now and trying desperately NOT to buy it...

Perhaps not similar to the other cars, but a mk1 Focus RS comes to mind? Potentially won't lose any value if mileage is kept low and un modified, some excellent one's about for 8/9k.

As said though doesn't quite fit the cars you have listed so far and maybe this wouldn't intrest you.

Monaro? V8 soundtrack, good for weekends away, nothing like a VX220 though, so perhaps not hardcore enough.

If you went for a VX or a Chimaera would that just be a weekend car?

I'd agree with your assessment of the three above, particularly the Chimaera. Speaking from personal experience, I found the opportunities to use a more hardcore track-orientated fun car were quite limited and I ended up going back to a TVR. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to rely on one as a daily driver - although there are those out there who do - but that boot space and touring ability can really open up extra options when something like a Caterham or an Elise might have to be left at home.

I don't know if you've driven a Griffith or Chimaera, but they are some way short of something like a VX220 in terms of dynamic finesse and overall grip. They're superb tourers, though, and I defy anyone to find a car with more sense of occasion for the same money.

Z4 Coupe rather than the M? Smaller running costs and can be bought with nice spec within your budget.

What type of car do you want and for what sort of use?

This budget gives you quite a variety of vehicle types you could consider should you want too. Will it be a daily or just a weekender?

If it's more of a toy then I think something more Se7en like or rawer would be the way to go. Or something brash and loud but a good GT if you'll be going away in it. If it's going to be a daily then it might change what I'd look at/recommend.

Boxster S would be an obvious candidate too. Your budget would get the very best, late 986, or an early 987.

Ive owned both a Chimaera and a VX in the past, and enjoyed both for very different reasons. If I was to buy either again they wouldnt be for everyday, but I would have to sell my run around to fund the extra for a Z4M so would be a daily. Both very differnt cars which was why I thought a Z4M might be a good compromise. But potential big bills do worry me.

Having spent the last few months looking at Z4Ms, I'd be surprised (but delighted) to find many examples for under £14-15k. Was a very, very enjoyable car to test drive!

TVR would clearly be immense.

300bhp/ton imposter alert (no obscure yank tank recommended in post)...
