Mechwarrior Online - World of Tank with Robots
Discussion
Do you like World of Tanks?
Do you like big stompy robots with lasers and missiles?
Do you like free games?
If yes then you might be interested in http://mwomercs.com/
Q: Ok so it has big stompy robots, but will I have to grind into the biggest robot or get killed all the time by bigger robots?
A: The developers are trying to go for something called "Role Warfare" so while having some big robots to do the killing using smaller robots for scouting and target painting is a good idea as it using some of the medium sized robots to provide support to the big ones. If you want to sneak about and target paint people to allow your friends to dump a bucket load of missiles on them then fill your boots.
Q: That doesn't sound like World of Tanks! Why are you comparing it to World of Tanks?!?
A: So it is a free to play game but you can buy new robots and other things if you want. Also in the works is a Clan Wars system similar to what you see in World of Tanks as well as factions that you can join and be a freelance Merc for or join a player Company and kill other robots for cash monies and rewards.
Q: This sounds cool! Is it full of sweaty nerds?
A: It is based off of Battletech so there are tons of sweaty nerds who will be roleplaying their fav character from the books (don't read them they are bad) and a ton of other sweaty nerds trolling the first sweaty nerds for roleplaying and not being Uber Pwnzorz and killing people with their robot.
Q: Ewww sweaty nerds!
A: Big, Stompy, Robots, With, Lasers
The game is currently in closed beta with a very strict NDA in place. However some in game footage has been leaked to you tube a few times showing lots of customisation for your Battlemech (robot) including engine, weapon, jump jets, armour and ammo amounts. Also taking the biggest Mech available is not always a good idea as the balance between Mechs of different size is while not perfect quite good with smaller lighter Mechs able to get behind bigger and heavier ones do get off rear armour shots. If you have played any of the Mechwarrior games in the past then the this reportedly plays a lot like the earlier Mechwarrior 2 games in being more of a simulation rather than the more FPS like Mechwarrior 3 and 4.
So if you want to be strapped into a walking nuke reactor at 6am and be killing people before breakfast then you know where to go.
P.S. I tried looking for a thread for this already but didn't see one.
P.P.S You can pilot one Mech called a Stalker and be one of those creepy guys from the Match.com thread in the lounge.

Oh and companies are making custom joy sticks for it such as this concept one:

Wibble

This is causing me mixed emotions.
I was trailing the release of the new Mechwarrior for the past couple of years, waiting for a new PC full game version. Then I heard they'd shelved it for this online only game.
I'm gonna wait to play before I get excited. Takes me back to the old days of Mechwarrior 2 and using my joystick with 26 million buttons all hotlinked to different weapon combinations

I looked at purchasing the founders pack to get early access and then saw the prices!
Are those prices usual for this type of game? It looks very expensive to me, the cheapest package is $30 dollars for one month going up to $120 for the 3 month legendary pack. Is this going to be like World of Tanks where you get to a certain level and then basically come to a standstill in progress unless you are willing to spend loads of dosh?
I realise these pay monthly or micro transaction type games are all the rage now but I would have prefered to pay £40-50 just the once like other games and then played mutiplayer on a level playing field rather than getting my arse handed to me by people prepared to spend that every month.

If you want you can pay nothing for this ever if you want. The founders packs are just like those collectors editions you can buy for other games. I bought elite because I am a huge nerd and want this to succeed.

As for the engine it runs on CryEngine 3 and apparently looks great.

Yes I know this but have you played World of Tanks? That game is also "free" until you get to about level 5-6 at which time you almost hit a brick wall in progress and regularly get destroyed by higher level players who are willing to spend large amounts of money. Yes in theory you could play totally free in that game too, if you are willing to spend the next year grinding through matches to try to get the top stuff. I know the developers need to make some money for all their hard work but I'm just not a fan of these "pay to advance" type deals. It causes a huge imbalance between those who are willing to spend money every month and those who don't. It's not done with the aim of improving gameplay, it's done for pure greed\profit at the detriment of the game IMO.

Ah fair enough misinterpreted you. I understand what you mean about World of Tanks but then I just have a max skilled crewed Leopard and run around in that one shotting Arty.
Yes you are right, there are other viable ways to plat WoT as I am sure there will be in this game. Don't get wrong, I am psyched this is coming out as I loved the old Mechwarrior games, my objection is more around the disparity that the pay to play mechanic creates. I'd prefer it if they had some dedicated "free play" servers only so you didn't get constantly dropped into matches where you are taking your poky tier 5 vehicle against someone whose dropped several million credits\gold on his tier 10. At the very least I hope the game balance is improved in this so as not to put you at such a disadvantage, I very much doubt it though as the whole reason they do this is they hope that you get frustrated and drop money on upgrades, the free play is just a lure to try to hook you in.
I'm wondering if they would be better off with the one off cost model and then charge for additional content? (map packs etc) like MW3 et al?
I too had a look at the founders pack but am having a tough time justifying the cost. I've done pay monthly games before (Played EVE for YEARS) and £10 a month didn't feel like a sting.
Just curious about how this will work. Then again I can't imagine for one second the run and gun crowd will be into this so they'll have a smaller client base, restrict that base to the PC it gets smaller still.
Hope it succeeds and manages that line of accessibility \ achievement vs player financial outlay.
