Out of curiosity, how much for a 959?
Discussion
I was browsing the classifieds with a friend and we came across this:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3201937.htm
When i was growing up these were always my favorite so to see one up for sale just got me wondering / dreaming etc
Are we talking Carrera GT money? Or something around 964 RSR?

350 miles - what a waste!
Thats like 2 miles pa - the engine will be shagged - great paperweight though!
You're right, the engine will want all its seals replaced at a minimum.Thats like 2 miles pa - the engine will be shagged - great paperweight though!
That's the problem with importing a 959 to the good old US of A. They may make the worlds worst MPG cars & SUV's but gawd help you if you want to run something like the 959 in California, it's basically impossible to pass the smog test & therefore the car cannot be used on the road there. ISTR that Bill Gates imported one when they first came out and it sat in a customs shed for quite some time while he tried to get it road legal. I don't remember if he ever succeeded though...

yep, he & bruce canepa worked on the legal side of it for a long, long time. the result now is the "car of historical significance" rule that although restrictive, and long winded, allows classics to be brought into the usa to be displayed at shows & events etc. That's the problem with importing a 959 to the good old US of A. not quite sure if you were stopped on the pacific highway with one you'd have to argue with chips that you were on the way to some car show or other though?!

There was an article about a US 959 in Octane the other week. Fully road legal (and 220 mph capable!!). It seems the gent in question (not Gates) has probably spent as much on upgrades as he spent on the car. That's the problem with importing a 959 to the good old US of A. Well, Specialist Cars in Malton got hold of a 959 for a customer of theirs in the far East and I happened to go in there not long after they had finished servicing it. You get used to a bit of sales puffery when looking at second hand car ads but when they said it still had that 'new car smell', they were not wrong. It has become the definition of a time warp car for me and I feel really lucky to have seen it.
The car had been held in a bonded warehouse from new and the original owner had never driven it, it was an investment and he happened to see Specialist Cars advertising for a 959 and responded. According to Mark, the car went for £750k but then I think he said it was going to Hong Kong and they have luxury import duty on vehicles like this which is around 100% of the purchase price. Ironically, for them to replace the tyres on the vehicle only cost £95 a corner!
The customer had a money is no object, get me the best example in the world brief though so I imagine he was elated when they found him a Sport, delivery miles and number 1 off the production line.
It featured on Pistonheads - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=106... so I won't recussitate the article but have a read, it's better than the Canepa car being a Sport and having done about 12 miles!

But you can kind of see the point in this, can't you.
It was one of the defining cars of its generation, along with the F40.
If money was no object, would anyone not have one in their fantasy 10 car garage?
I totally see the point and if money is no object, I'll have one to drive and one to display thank you very much. It was one of the defining cars of its generation, along with the F40.

I know its been said before - what with nothing being worth the sum of its parts and all that - but if you price some parts for a 959 it doesn't take long to get there; how does anyone insure one??
Rear bumper lower - £75k
Rear spoiler - £45k
Front bumper - £25k
Engine - £100k
Tyre pressure sensors - £5k x 8!!
Wheels - £6k x 4
959's were 'only' £100k ten or so years ago..........
