Are E39 M5 prices going up?
Discussion
Good ones will remain stable now for a while I think, but may appreciate in the longer term
E34 M5 (and E34 Alpina B10 BT & V8) is the next to start moving up I reckon, what with good E30, E24 and E28 Ms having already jumped in value strongly in the last few years
E30 M3 money from a few years ago now seems to be going into Z3M Coupes and E46 CSLs, although I think the E36 Alpina B8 may reckon in the appreciating market soon too

Lots of E39's for sale but few good ones around. Fewer e34's (Under 20 good ones left in the UK with any quantifiable history) and still expensive to run.....trust me i have one. Like any car well kept the better ones will always be worth something. A decent e39 is a very good car and easily tweaked!
Hi,
It seems asking prices have somewhat stabilised and the E39 M5's lower end of the market seems to have 'held' at around £5K. One or two examples have come in advertised at like £4500 and £4750 or so I recall vaguely recently. There's more facelift cars at around the £7-8K range now too and less 2002/2003 cars at £12K, they seem to now be around the £9-10K figure. Not very many advertised at all above £10K now, just a handful every so often.
I doubt there'll ever be a time in the UK where an average miled, very well looked after and maintained E39 M5 will go up in value to perhaps £13-15K or more. There will of course be a handful which will be advertised that way ! there's too many around to ever do anything like the E30 M3 did with regards to values/selling prices.
What will strengthen asking prices and thus hopefully for owners, selling prices, is that potential buyers will want the E39 M5 over the E60 M5 due to the running costs of the E60. It's possible for suitably knowledgeable owners to work themselves on an E39 M5 to a given level, whereas on an E60 M5 there's not much at all that can be done this way and many more aspects will need a specialist with suitable equipment etc. Those independent specialists who invest in the tens of thousands it costs for that equipment, will probably be able to then set a relatively good labour rate and enjoy as cars falling out of warranty can at least be continued to be looked after. I suspect that it'll only really be a handful of specialists who'll actually do that though.
Cheers, Dennis!

BMW have an e39 m5 for sale on the website - proof positive that they are appreciating - I used to have one of similar vintage. Bought it in 2006 for 17k from a main dealer with around the same miles on it. Turns out, in thev6 years since, an m5 from a main dealer has depreciated just 2k.
If it were up for 3 grand less, I would have bought it the day it went on there, but 15 is a bit 'fully valued' when some y reg versions are for sale for 7-8k in the classified at similar mileages.
Turns out providence and peace of mind is worth 6 grand in year 1.
My e46 m3 will do me just nicely thanks!
