To cut a longer storey short my son bought a 5 year old Audi S3 in April. Loves the car but decided he thinks even more of his GF and has better use for the money and has already got 2 SP30s in it. He's decided to get rid of it and buy something "sensible" for about £7,000. So if you were him what would you buy?

dont think its the car thats at fault mate ive got an st220 and not been done once for speeding in 5 years i also drive a sprinter all day for 10 hours so even if he had a micra he'd probably get done again!! sorry for telling it how it is IMHO.

Well, he's not going to get much money back if he sells the S3 then buys something for £7k. Maybe a couple of grand, if he's lucky.

So I'd suggest a brick under the throttle pedal.

Got to agree as above, car is irrelevant with someone of a certain attitude, the lad sounds like me except I've not actually been done for speeding, pulled a couple times but never proven.

Only thing that will teach him is the licence being taken away.
I'm in court tomorrow and face losing mine, that's a wake-up call.eek

It's an Audi S3 not a Veyron...... His driving is at fault, not the car.....

Its the driver not the car. Sp30's can be picked up in slow cars just as easy.

As per usual the Pistonhead crew have chosen to focus on completely the wrong part of the OP and offer useless responses.

It doesn't matter if his son is a psychopathic gun trafficking drug lord from sierra leone, he is asking what car not what is your opinion of his son who got caught speeding a few times.

Depends on what kind of car he requires OP, big? small? petrol? diesel? does it need to be good for cruising on motorways and A roads or is it more used around town?

Depending on all the above it could go a number of ways.

Tyrannical, you're right. The SP30s are the lesser part of this - it's the need to sell it and pocket the difference thatr counts. In fact one of the SPs is for 36 in a 30, but with a 265bhp car there is a temptation to be silly and as his job invloves driving......... As it happens a mate of mine is very interested, he knows what was paid for it and what he wants for it.

So to get back on track - what would you buy for about £7,000? I'd look at a Focus or an Alfa 147, but that's just me. An A3 would be good but going from an S3 to a diesel might be a bit of a disappointment.

If I were changing my car because I wanted to be discouraged from speeding, I would buy a Rover 75.

Why are people pretending they don't understand how having a quick car is more likely to make you speed than driving a slow one?

How so, 30mph is 30mph irrespective of what you're driving.

Are you playing dumb intentionally or are you actually just dumb? Why do you think insurance for young drivers costs more even if they have more ncb than somebody twice their age? Young people in fast car's are more likely to acquire speeding tickets when driving a fast car, it comes down to a level of maturity and self control which both go hand in hand. i am 36 and have a 400bhp 135i, i would not trust me self with it 10 years ago.The guy's son has acknowledged his problem and is doing the right thing by getting something slower.Stop acting like a dumbass just to you can be a patronizing little .

EDIT Just noticed that you are retired, maby this is a case of you being so old that you can not remember what its like to be young and have a fast car.In that case i take back the patronizing little comment.

Well said

It's pretty obvious why he needs a slower car and good that he realizes he does not currently posses the self control to not drive the s3 flat out.

What does the OP's son want to do with th car. Does he have any clue what he wants?? Saloon, estate, coupe. Do a little bit of work your self!!!

It might make the recommendations from the PH massive a bit easier?

OK - 5 door hatch, maybe a saloon, not less than 1.6 petrol of 1.9 diesel, but not an old man's car. And yes he/we can still break the speed limit whatever it is

Although there's still the question of just how desperate you need to be to potentially only end up with £2k in your pocket on the deal - and a st diesel hatch in exchange.
