Get the ECU diag running
Discussion
Hi chaps, I have warned you that I will need help with this
So please see what I have done so far (its a 1999 AJP 4.2):
1 - connecting my diag cable which I purchased from Steve Heath to ECU and PCI connection on Laptop (PCI card is working)

2 - Checked status and settings in Windows device manager - its on COM1 with reduced bits per second (4800) as per a suggestion I have seen on here eearlier

3 - Ignition of the Cerbie on, so as if ready to fire her up.... still, this is what I get

I have tried both, the old and the new diag SW from Tangueros website - with the same result though. Working with computers regularly I thought this should be no problem to handle but apparently I need some guidance here...

The immobiliser needs to be off and the ignition on as well (either position 2 or running), sorry if I am stating the obvious just trying to help
No worries... I am willing to grasp at straws so happy about all suggestions here

Did as you said with turning the ignition on (black button) and then immobilizer off (keyfob).
If my settings above seem alright I might order another serial to USB connector then... I currently have only one (with a prolific chip).
Had this today myself.
Go to map link and buy their usb to serial lead.
Connect it all up and turn the ignition on.
Go to device manager and click on the ports device, right click what ever is there and delete it.
Pull the USB out wait a few seconds and reinsert. PC will install stuff. Once complete right click again, go to advanced and set to comm1.
Now close the software (this should boot you out of your login). Restart the software and it should work, if not restart the machine and it should work then.
Best to leave the ignition on throughout.

Good tip I read on here is to open up notepad. Type some text and then when you close the ECU software it won't logout the user as there is unsaved work.
Great tip! That will ease my pain during further connection testing.... Couldn't say how often I have restarted the laptop yesterday
