"precautionary 3rd centre radiator fitted to improve cooling" ?

I must say, I've never heard of that before.

Thanks,
Thought you bought a 2008 C2S only recently?

Did this on mine the moment I purchased it. smile

Dropped a good 10c of the temperature on a spirited drive, that without a doubt is good for the engine and should help prevent scoring.

Ditto - in my case coupled with one of Hartechs "low temperature thermostats" as well. My car ran a whole load cooler all the time (you could see the oil temps were about 10 degrees lower than previously and even the oil pressure was higher when at hot idle - so theoretically slighly less "thin" at high temperatures).

The Porsche centre radiator is about the most cost effictive mod you can do (and it comes as a complete kit with all of the hoses / new plastic surrounds / mounting brackets etc).

Does this not mean if you are running at cooler temps the oil does not get to the correct operating temp and therefore more engine wear?

Not if the thermostat(s) are working correctly.

Mine has a centre rad too. Quite a common "enthusiast" mod

Nope, thermostat takes care of that.

Previously on a spirited drive it was not rare to see 110c oil temp, or a session on track could push towards 120c.

With the centre radiator the car generally holds 92c and struggles to go beyond 100c on the road and on track it remains sub 110c.

So the cooling helps keep the oil temp a lot lower and for about £250 fitted it is well worth it and won't void warranty. smile

I also did the X51 under trays on mine too, helps cool the gearbox more. My core when bored were last inspected shocked the inspector, as he said most have some very faint scoring thats not a problem, yet mine was un-marked, so hoping to keep it that way. smile

Mark, but surely running so much cooler has its own issues? If you want cool thick oil, and lots of pressure then don't let the car warm up before you open it up - extreme I know but a logical extension of your argument. I can see the benefit in additional cooling preventing the car running too hot (ie so it never goes above optimum temp), but not sure that running 10C below optimum temp is good. But happy to be put right - just confused..

How come the modification won't void a warranty ?

It's Porsche o.e. Part designed for the car, this is allowed under warranty rules. smile

These engines are well known to run on the hot side which can lead to many of the major issues we see. Hartech even go as far as recommending an 80 degC thermostat to go with the third radiator. Obviously there is also a lower temp limit too, which is why you wouldn't thrash it from cold, but 80degC and 20degC are worlds apart.

True, I've not bothered with the lower temp stat, for me I just wanted to reduce peak temperatures, as it is peak temperatures which cause the damage.

My car still operates at the default 92c once fully upto temperature, until it gets there the car does not exceed 3000rpm. For me fitting an 80c stat it would just feel wrong hooning the car at 80c, when Porsche designed the car to be hooned at 92c. It is just peak temperatures to watch out for and the 3rd radiator does a very good job at lowering those.

I think your intent is admirable, but perhaps a little over-zealous. 60 degrees for oil and water seem to be the common points up to which manufacturers (who make a statement) ask you to be gentle. Not saying you are doing a bad thing, just perhaps a little over-protective.

By the way is the 92 oil or water?
