Ouch my ear bloody hurts!

Get this bit out the way first:
Googling basically yields 'this is very serious go to your doctor' so with that in mind I'm going to try and get an appointment tomorrow to get checked out.
Basically woke up Sunday morning with excrutiating shooting pains going through my right ear. It's not blocked, it's not red/inflamed, my hearing isn't affected.
Lifting some rubbish which needed running to the dump made me tense my neck muscles which really hurt my ear (?!). Fearing that it might be blocked I tried some of that Otrex stuff last night but it's done nothing (I don't think my ear is blocked in any way) and my ears look very clean (apparently!)
What could it be? I still have random shooting pains this morning at work, my ear is also really sensitive to touch.

One very reasonable possibility is that you're growing a big f
k-off spot right inside, near your eardrum.
Had one last year, went to A&E, convinced dying etc... was a bit embarrassing when they used an otoscope (resulting in proper swearing and sweating pain) and pointed out the massive zit!

If you are really unlucky it's an infection on the other side of the ear drum. After a few days you'll be in unbelievable pain. You'll get some antibiotics from the Dr but eventually it'll burst out through the ear drum and a green fluid will then drain over the next few days and ear wax will be an odd colour for months. You'll never quite hear the same out that side.

A trip to the Doc's in my opinion. I have hearing aids in both ears, (for the last 30yrs or so and no I am not in my 90's.)
This/your 'pain' is caused sometimes by a slight scratch that becomes infected in the outer ear, can you remember an itchy ear you didn't scratch with a dirty fingernail? It can also be caused by in the ear headphones, and is called Doctors ear, due to them wearing stereoscopes etc.
Yes it's bloody painful, I know, but you are not going to die. Doctors and antibiotic spray (Otomise)will do the trick. Oh and paracetamol. HTH

Ignored my own advice and after the pain subsided yesterday I decided not to go to the doctors.
Now the pain is back twice as bad. Constant throbbing which is aggravated by moving my jaw or tensing my neck.
Thinking it might just have been the way I slept on it I've foolishly driven to work only for the pain to get worse. Struggling to sit here now and can't find any painkillers. Damnit.
I haven't used in-ear earphones for a while either, so it wouldn't be from that. The only thing I've changed is that I used to always have showers in the morning, which have now been replaced with having a bath because our new place hasn't got a shower curtain yet. I'm wondering if submerging my head underwater has f*cked my ear up.

You might have Swimmers ear. Fairly common - can come from bathing, showers, swimming (funnily enough) wearing ear defenders, headphones, ear buds etc.
Usually results in a sore ear canal and a crusty / scabby ear canal.
If it is the above then it will go away after a week or so - I have had it a few times and it can be anything from light irritation to being really tender.
Might be worth getting it checked out if its really sore.

Feel your pain, have had similar on two occasions in last 5 years. Had Otitis (Google it) on both occasions. Antibiotic tablets and spray cleared it up after about a week.
Reckon it was caused by cleaning my ears out in the shower/bath every day. This removed all the earwax which basically left my ear canal open to infection. Moral of the story was to be less obsessive about washing out ears.
Back in the 1990s I had a huge zit right in my inner ear. When it popped it was the loudest/most satisfying thing I have ever heard.
Reckon it was caused by cleaning my ears out in the shower/bath every day. This removed all the earwax which basically left my ear canal open to infection. Moral of the story was to be less obsessive about washing out ears.

My mother had an ear infection on holiday once, years ago.
Got antibiotics from local doctor and seemed to improve only for it to return once we'd all got back to UK.
My father found her collapsed one day when he came home from work.
Ambulance to hospital, 2 weeks in hospital fighting off meningitis caused by the infection spreading into the cerebral fluids.
She was never the sme after that.

The best way to take Amoxycilin so it doesn't make you feel sick, is to have it just before you eat. I found antibiotics on an empty stomach can make you feel pretty sick.I'm all good.
